RE: The economy must be improving

Most RV parks I've visited recently have pretty good occupancy rates. I was fortunate enough to get the last back-in site at an RV park here in Albuquerque. That being said, since I spend winters in Yuma, AZ I did perceive a SLIGHT drop in occupancy at some RV parks but they are still getting plenty of business nonetheless. I don't think RVers are being impacted as much as others, at least according to what I'm noticing compared to times past.

RE: Memorial day

Clarkston Wa ... where the Snake River and the Clearwater meet. Going to take a jet boat trip through Hells Canyon too!
You bring back memories. I spent a summer in Clarkston 5 years ago. Bought my current fiver there and my current truck across the river in Lewiston, ID. I can't remember the name of the RV park where I stayed but do remember it was across the street from some apartments.

RE: Memorial day

I try to avoid traveling on holiday weekends. As a fulltimer I can choose to do so. By staying put I don't add to the holiday traffic nor do I grab an idyllic spot somewhere that a part-time camper could enjoy with his family. Right now I'm encamped in Albuquerque for a few months.

RE: 5th Wheel Tripod Stabalizers?

I haven't read all the posts but my logical way of thinking indicates to me that a tripod under the pin box couldn't be much help, especially with side-to-side movement. Additionally, the front jacks won't allow any front to back movement, assuming the rear stabilizing jacks are in use as well. I know people swear that they work for them but I can't figure out how a supporting device under the pin box can make any difference in an area that is already pretty stable...

RE: Full time 5th wheel...extra car?

My truck has been my daily driver for the past 5 years. I do miss my Saturn (previously a towed vehicle behind my motorhome), which I had to sell when I purchased my truck/fiver combo. That car was super reliable and good on mileage. I even considered towing the Saturn behind my fiver but decided I didn't want the hassle of worrying which states allow double towing, along with other considerations. I've even toyed with the idea of purchasing a small, older vehicle for use in my winter quarters (Yuma) but I would have to leave the vehicle there while I travel the rest of the year. So, I'm resolved to leave things the way they are, using my truck as my sole vehicle. There seems to be no other way...

RE: OOOPS, it happened again

Are you sure it was diesel? Sometimes the station has the wrong product in the tanks you fill from.
I'm in the habit of sniffing the nozzle before pumping fuel. This way I'm sure I'm filling with diesel.

RE: GMAC Insurance

I have had GMAC for 9 years now. It has gone up maybe 10 or 15 dollars. If mr. ed is saving $50/month, then I would get mine for free. Maybe because he a Fulltimer is why his is so expensive. By the way, I pay $287.00 every six months. I think it is too much considering I have only put 20,000 miles on the MH in the last 9 years, but I really don't think anyone would be much cheaper than that.
Ahhhh, you caused me to think a little bit. I was thinking of the $50/month I saved by changing to a different provider for my supplemental health insurance. To be correct, I realized a savings by going with Foremost vehicle insurance, but the savings weren't as great as $50/mo..:)

RE: GMAC Insurance

I got tired with GMAC constantly raising my rates (no accidents, ever) and finally decided to go with Foremost. I saved about $50/month. I've never before in my life had insurance rates go up while the value of the insured vehicles was going down.

RE: Negotiating for Cheaper Rate on Site

Well, I could just kick myself! After obtaining such a reasonable rate for 2 weeks stay I decided to move on to Albuquerque this Monday after all. It's beginning to get a little too hot here in Tucson. Oh well, it was so nice of the owners to offer the rate. I wish I could have taken advantage of it. :(

RE: How long for poop to break down?

The waste tanks are a sealed system except for the roof vents. If you have odor coming from any other place you have a problem that needs to be addressed - not chemicals.
I have used only water for ten years and don't have any odor. Even after two weeks without dumping the black tank in 95 degree weather in AZ.
I do have a venturi device on the roof vent that pulls air of the tank when moving or if there is a breeze when stopped.
X2. Over 20 years fulltiming and have never used chemicals in the black holding tank. I'm currently in southern AZ where temps are reaching 95-100 deg and there is zero odor. I still have unopened bottles of chemicals that came with my current fiver and will probably never use them. Maybe 'cause I eat a healthy diet??

RE: Anyone ever use the oven?

Good question. Nope, I've never used mine, neither in my current fifth wheel nor in my previous motorhome in which I fulltimed 17 years. I can't say why. I seem to get by fine with stovetop cooking and the microwave.

RE: lube plate makes unhooking more difficult ?

Whether hitching or unhitching I raise the pinbox until it just barely clears the plate. Even so, when unhitching I almost always have to back the truck slightly in order to pull the handle. I sometimes have to do this several times, each time raising the fiver slightly to just clear the plate until I can finally pull the handle to release the pin.
BTW, when finally unhitched I measure the length of one of the jacks to ground and make a note of it before leveling. This way I can raise the jacks to the exact height needed to hitch up when it's time to travel on.

RE: Coolant Vent Plug Impossible to Remove

Thanks again for the replies & assistance. I've already pretty much come to the conclusion that I will return the truck to the mechanics and have them remove the plug and vent the right way....
(Why couldn't blue Loctite be used instead of red? It would have been a whole lot easier. I guess there's a reason....)

RE: Repost to my bad smell

Hi mr. ed,
If one cell shorts out the rest will gas violently. The pressure can literally pop the tops off the battery.
Thanks for the explanation, Pianotuna....

RE: Coolant Vent Plug Impossible to Remove

I'm wondering: just in case all the trapped air hasn't been removed isn't there another procedure that can be implemented, such as loosening the filler cap on the radiator while idling the engine? I vaguely remember doing that on previous vehicles I've owned that didn't have a vent plug, but now I'm not sure...
EDIT: I just learned from another forum that red Loctite had evidently been applied to the threads at the factory and the plug needs to be heated, just as some of you said. Should I go back to the repair facility and have them remove the plug or is using the above method acceptable? Thanks...

I don't understand how the "tops" could have come off by themselves? To get my battery filler tops off I have to pry with a screwdriver...

Coolant Vent Plug Impossible to Remove

Had my coolant changed today at a local auto repair shop (owners are friends of mine). When it came time to remove the vent plug (pictured below) they found it impossible to remove. All manner of allen wrenches, including a ratcheting tool failed to even budge the plug. Both mechanics tried to muscle the thing loose but nearly broke a wrench trying. They finally were able to vent the system by loosening the hose by the plug. I don't understand why a plug that is supposed to be removable has to be so tight it's impossible to remove. You'd think at least anti-seize could have been applied to the threads! Oh well, I'm done venting.....

RE: Getting ready to go full time!!! Where to winter?

I winter in Yuma, AZ. The winter weather is arguably the best in the country. I've paid space rent as low as $185/mo up to about $300/mo. Many folks in the Foothills area rent private or semi-private spaces at fairly reasonable rates. This past winter I paid $275/mo, which included $50 electric. Nice, quiet area inhabited mainly by older folks.

Negotiating for Cheaper Rate on Site

I received a pleasant surprise today when I asked the RV park management if I could extend two more weeks at the monthly rate. I didn't expect a "yes" but that's exactly what happened. I'm at a park in southern AZ which is slowly clearing out as summer approaches. The park owner evidently felt it made good business sense to rent out what would otherwise have been a non-revenue creating site for a lesser price rather than make no profit at all. So my message to all: don't hesitate to negotiate if you're in the same situation.
How the numbers came out: 1/2 monthly rate = $145 (or a little over $70/wk). The regular weekly rate would have been almost double, although electric would be included. I'm still ahead...:C
