I have a rubber torsion type suspension. No spring shackles. When I repacked the bearings last year I placed the jack between the wheels on the frame. No problem. Besides, if you jack on a spring shackle you are putting all the stress there, so I don't see the difference. Also, the trailer will be hitched to my tow vehicle, so it's not going to fall off the jack.
I didn’t suggest jacking on the shackles. Jack on the spring pads or ubolts where the load rests normally.

I had a Chinese bomb explode on the way out of Moob, went back to Moab for replacement tires. Got five less than 3 month old BFG Commercials. The tire dealer knew what he was doing. However, one of the four guys with impacts and floor jacks did not. Three of the four put the floor jacks under the spring pads, the fourth was going for the axel when I stopped him. I would take the RV to the tire store but keep an eye on the work. If they are conciseness they will at minimum insist you observe them checking each lug with a torque wrench They will not lift the RV by the frame, I wouldn’t either, can’t believe any would suggest this. Some manufactures insist jacking from the frame is preferred, still haven’t figured that one yet. It’s unsafe and poses the serious possibility of applying much too much stress in one spot.

What everybody has failed so far to mention is that the best way to see the coast is North to South. That way the ocean is on your curb side and it is far easier to get into and out of the turnouts. So now the only issue is how to get to the North Oregon coast.
Great suggestion. Take this seriously. I did the drive North to South would have been a pain to try to take in the view going the other way. Do CA Hwy 1 in the middle of a week day, fantastic scenery. . Don’t let anyone talk you out of this drive.

Another issue to address is the differences in fitting oil bath vs. bearing grease applications. I presume oil bath would fitted more snugly than packed grease applications. I know that when fitting a ring and pinion I always fitted the carrier and pinion bearings with a significant preload. If I had preloaded conventional front wheel bearings in the same manner failure would have been almost immediate. Both applications experience similar severe loading. Could it be the grease needs room to get between the bearings surfaces where oil bath lubrication is forced between the surfaces?

Always follow the manual for your axle. Torque requirements vary, depending on bearing size, thread pitch, cotter pin hole clocking, etc. No one answer is right for all.

If you only hand tighten and then back off like recommended by some the bearings will last about a week.

In another life, I had responsibility for farm tractor design including drivetrains. These drivetrains had a lot of tapered roller bearings, and they were all assembled with some slight pre-load. One of the reasons for a slight pre-load is you end up with more of the rollers supporting the load.
Question? Would this method be accommodating for new bearings that haven’t seated? Would this method possible be a little tight for repacked used bearings? I’ve always been careful to keep bearings mated when cleaning and repacking.

The normal Alt is now a small frame design = smaller components. This Alt does not have a good record. The Alt in the link below is a large frame unit that has a much better history. The mounting points are identical. It is clocked at 3 rather than12 which is also a plus.140 Amp Large Frame Alt

As for the wife. The first fill up we went on her I told her to look for the following: The word Diesel, the dirtiest gas pump handle, and the dirtiest area of concrete. If you find this, then fill it up.

I strongly suggest you stay with ST rated tires, they are specificlly designed for trailers with dual axles, the sidewalls have extra plys for turning, and the tread raps down the sides for traction on turns. If you want a heavier tire, get tires for the gooseneck flatbeds used for hotshot trailers and are usually 10 ply rated. When you turn a corner the tires roll sideways on the sidewalls, especially if you have multiple axles. I recommend General, Kelly, or continental if available, all good USA made tires, work with a local tire shop that does semi's and heavy equipt tires, they will get you the correct tire for your application, and may cost more but will out last 2 or 3 sets of cheaper brands, usually with road hazzard warranties.
With some real world experience you will discover the propaganda that promotes ST’s is in error, it’ only purpose is legitimize an inferior product. I will admit they are an economical substitute for a reliable tire. I use the on utility trailers that go short distances locally. A tire failure on an RV can and does cause damage. I travel with my RV thousands of miles, not hundreds yearly. Running junk ST’s is not an option. Why do you think they are rated at 65 MPH and not rated for passenger vehicle use? Think about that one for a while, you might conclude there might be a safety / liability issue involved.

My experience with ST vs. LT indicates the ST’s are overrated by 50% and LT’s are underrated by the same amount. ST rating are a fantasy, Goodyear’s G’s are a fantasy. Anyone that has confidence in ST tires is way beyond an optimist. I know how to maintain tires, I’ve experienced one too many unwarranted / unexplainable ST failures

From all this discussion and observation I’m inclined to believe a Reese Dual Cam, without the cams, will produce Hensley like results without the bump and the brake controller wizardly.
Hensley offers zero rotational resistance and does provide weight transfer and the bump. Make sure every thing is lubed up real well on your Reese, leave the cams off to minimize any rotational resistance. Don’t you have the Hensley effect for at least 2500 less and no bump.
