RE: Homesick for the sunshine!

105 degrees, 2% humidity and pure sunshine in Tucson, AZ yesterday. Dew point was -4 degrees. Did some pruning and the leaves on the branches were nearly dried out within an hour. Dry heat does feel good on the joint aches then followed with a dip in the pool!

RE: Towing

I used the Harbor Freight lights which were in the sunlight for 3 months this last winter. At the end of the 3 months the wiring became brittle, broke & fell apart. Luckily @ $9.99 I had purchased two sets so switched over to the second set for the last month. The wiring is pretty much junk so think of them as throw away!

RE: Copper Canyon - you have to do it!!

AGREE!!!!
One our best & favorite trips ever but we did it from the top down. Stayed at the old KOA park in Creel and took the train West. Also the advantage of staying at the Creel location is the cooler weather if you go in the spring or fall, can snow in the middle of the winter. Also the availability of tours down in the Canyon & surrounding area, a must do! We posted a trip report a few years ago. You do have to be a little more careful where you go in the canyon these days, a good guide is a must. Also don't forget the to visit the first place to have electric in Mexico, Hint it is at the bottom of the canyon, and the lost Mission.

RE: Double pull in Baja?

I've been doing it for years ( see signature ) Baja has not been a problem. Arizona is!! They insist the first tow must be a fifth wheel in order to tow a second. Last year I got a warning, in writing. I wonder how long before that drops off. Oh, and I had to unhook at Wilcox and have the wife drive the car.
Thanks bigdog,
Your pull to San Felipe is a bit safer from LEO than pulling all the way to La Paz. Too much of the local economy is dependent on Gringos. At least I know I could double pull to your location & El Golfo.
AZ requires as you said a 5er hitch or a server tow bar , the 10,000 lb type. A ball mount tow bar can not be used as the first hitch from the tow vehicle to the first towed. For me that is understandable. I have many friends that double pull without problems from the AZ LEO. One, a retired LEO himself, was stopped a couple of years ago and inspected. The AZ LEO restated to him the above and wished him safe travels as he uses a server 10,000 lb type tow bar.

RE: Double pull in Baja?

For me this is now a dead issue. I received info from a PM that you can but a special license is req'd and you will be a target by LEO for sure. The Kayak will go on top of the Jeep.

RE: Hillsboro River State Park

It is an OK park, we stayed there this year. We found there was a lot of kiddie & dog noise capped off with A LOT of campfire smoke. I don't get the fire thing as it made the CG hazy & difficult to breath. If it were not for those two items the park would be a very good park.

RE: Double pull in Baja?

Dont know if its legal or not, but it would be downright scary meeting you on those narrow Baja roads. You only have inches of free-room to the centre line and would constantly be in the other lane of traffic.
Scorp
Not scary, what I pull is narrower than the motorhome and the overall length is the same as my old 5er setup I pulled all thu Mainland. I would still be shorter than any semi-truck you pass on a normal day's drive. The entire weight of the pulled setup would be less than 1/4 of the motorhome so it hardly moves the moho. This is a legal setup thu out the West (except CA), Southwest, South & Southeast. I have seen Van Campers that scared the heck out of me but it wasn't the rig. It is the driver of the rig that scares me, not the rig (most of the time, passing a rig in bad condition does give me great concern or someone driving a rig that is beyond their ability which I have seen many times).

Local AZ study about going to Nogales!

Interesting study completed and just released about the feelings of locals about going to Nogales, Son., MX. Being we live only 26 miles away, IMHO the study pretty much hits the nail on the head. Just an interesting read not meant to inflame any of the anti-Mexico crowd.

RE: Across the Gulf?

Have someone (friend, foe or pay a service) drive it to Cancun for you. Fly-in and RV your way home. Maybe a trusted family member would want to RV down & fly home while you take over and RV back. Tricky part is the paperwork but could be done. OR just have someone drive it to & from the TX/Mexico border. This alone will save you a week. OR have someone take it to the TX/Mexico border, RV down, store your RV, fly home and return within 6 months for vacation drive back to the USA.

RE: Plans, Winter 2012

Hope to complete the transaction on a house here in La Paz. We've got room for our 5er here. So we'll be here in the autumn through about next June or July. When you get to the area - would love to hang out with you at some of our favorite kayaking spots.
Actually - would love to hear from any RVers that end up in this part of Mexico and would like to hook up personally!

Our plans are to visit with the Kayak!!!!

RE: Trucks in Mexico

We have a heavyduty 2500 Dodge Ram 4X4 Ram Diesel Quadcab with tinted windows we in the past used to pull our 5er (still have the truck but now use a motorhome). While we never had a problem, we have received some very hard looks when we have pasted thu some of the towns on day trips. Did make us feel uncomfortable so would lower the windows so locals could see us inside. I have always had a kill switch hidden so if the truck was a target, it would have broken windows but could not be driven away. Also steel pop rivet the plates on so as to remove any temptation. Never a problem at Pemex but I do as moisheh posted.
I will add, when we were touring the bottom of Copper Canyon there sure was a LOT of USA plated pickups with expired tags on them.

RE: I5 OMG

Drove over 8,000 miles from AZ to Fl this last winter. Just came home from another over 2,400 mile trip from AZ to No. Cal back thu UT into AZ. California has the WORST roads in the country including some of the secondary roads. We drove Hwy 111, 1, 101, I5, 10 & 80. ALL were bad!
Not going back anytime soon and one of the main reasons is the roads. The other was the traffic, nearly as bad as Florida now!

HR / Freightliner chassis wandering steering

We bought our Holiday Rambler built on a Freightliner chassis just over a year ago. I first posted then that I was working on a wandering steering problem. Compared to other motorhomes & large equipment I have driven, the steering was about 50% of where it should be in ease of driving with the constant wandering.
A year later - SOLVED!!!
I first took our HR in for a front end alignment and have the tech check components to make sure there were no issues. I also asked them to check the adjustment of the steering gear box. Alignment went well & all components were is good shape. BUT they only gave the steering gear box a passing look and said no problem.
I then first checked tire pressure. New tires had just been installed and I found them 20lbs overinflated, made the adjustment. Drove the HR and found a very small bit of improvement. I then adjusted the steering gear being careful to not over adjust. Drove and WOW the steering improved to about 80-85% of where it should be.
It took a year of looking, tweaking & more looking. Finally I wondered if the Safe-T-Steer, I had adjusted it many times, was the cause of the problem. While in Florida getting a furnace fan motor replaced at a large dealer I took the time to walk down and talk to one of their chassis techs. I told him of the problem, what I had done and what did he think of the Safe-T-Steer. He said they never installed them, they did not like them but that was all he would offer. They install the unit from Deming, NM.
After returning home and before we left on another trip, I removed the Safe-T-Steer. After another 2,500+ mile adventure driving in every condition, the HR is now at about 98% of where I feel it should be. VERY PLEASED! The HR is now a pleasure to drive and makes the days of driving more relaxing and doable. No wandering and the winds are manageable. Knew in my case I would find the cause sooner or later as HR & Freightliner are great products and should preform well.

1969 Jeep CJ5

Just bought a 69 CJ5 to replace our toad. We pulled our HEAVY '05 Dodge Ram 4X4 as our toad last winter on a 6,000 mile trip. Everything went fine but was just too much toad. So since I am a classic car guy, I started looking for a replacement when we returned home. In the early 70's I had a '65 Jeep CJ5 with a V6 & Warn overdrive. Loved it and have always been sorry I let it go. WELL I found another, a '69 with the V6, overdrive AND power steering. I am thrilled. Will be my summer project to get her fixed up to my expectations. I use to pull the '65 with an old pickup or car so it will be a breeze for the DP. Just excited and wanted to share!
