RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 14-16, 2010

I was reading DavidG's post and hadn't looked at the author--though it was Laura the Lamb Lady (is that L to the 3rd power?)! Thought oh no, not again!

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 14-16, 2010

I did call Debra, then didn't get back to her. Her quote on the Prius III was a little higher than I could get it for elsewhere, then we decided on a Prius IV. Capitol met--and beat--the "only" price at Wilsonville Toyota. Really wanted to buy local if possible since we will get it serviced there (Capitol). There were other advantages at Capitol--a huge discount if you bought an oil change contract--basically a prepaid 10 year oil change contract. It would more than pay for itself in 5 years. That little bugger uses only synthetic oil and is spendy. They have serviced my Subaru since I got it. They also offer a free tire replacement on worn tires (not road hazards)--that doesn't cost us anything but having the car serviced there. I really don't want to drive out of town for service.

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 14-16, 2010

HooRah back at you! Dave was commissioned in June, 1963, went on active duty in January 1964, and retired after 29 years of service, 15 active and 14 reserve, in 1983. Bought a new Prius today and in honor of Veteran's Day went for an Oregon veteran's license plate with a Purple Heart (Viet Nam) badge on it.

Thanks for the memories, Ron! We were at Ft. Sill in 1968 for Dave's Artillery Officer's Advanced Course.

We may have to consider a yearly eastside AND westside (of the Cascades rally--maybe each would be smaller--but people could go to both if they can manage it.

Wow--you are old! Our grandkids are only 5 and 6--at that rate we probably won't have great grandkids! Congrats to you both--and especially to your granddaughter! :B

RE: Northwest Spring Rally, May 14-16, 2010

This will be the first year we haven't been to the Octoberfest in Mt. Angel in nearly 30 years--at least to work in a booth. Our Optimist Club ran a souvenir booth for many years, then got pushed out of that and went to a food booth--serving a very non-German Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich. It was just too labor intensive and our members are getting older. The ones participating were working themselves to death, and this past winter we withdrew and gave up our space. Rain could kill the whole fundraiser--and our goal wasn't to loose money. The profits just didn't justify working us faithful few to the bone. Camping there for a couple of days would be the way to go. It is less than 20 miles from where we live and there is an amazing amount of good German food. The area was settled by German and Swiss immigrants after the Oregon Trail settlements--they established the abby there. This area east and north of Salem has a huge German Catholic influence--they opened a mission church here in Sublimity and even had a nunnery and school in the 1870's. The little Catholic church here is one of the oldest in the state and is still very active. We hear the Church bells at 8 a.m. every Sunday morning--but now it is a recoding of the original bells. I think half the people in Stayton and Sublimity are related--and all Catholics. The same early settler's names are still found--many multiple times--in the phone book. Octoberfest is a very real part of the history of rural Marion county!

Wow, Donna--you really moved uptown! So glad you could get roomier housing--and still keep the Barth! :)

October is deer season--probably can't come! Eastern OR season ends on 14 October and Dave has a tag for far eastern Oregon--up against the Idaho border. The next weekend is Cascade open season I think. Would be nice--but we don't make plans that don't include hunting in September and October!

I know where Cheyenne Mountain is! We lived in Colorado Springs in 1964-65 for a year when Dave was stationed at Ft. Carson, Pretty country! We also traveled many of the passes you mentioned, both with a trailer and without, on our permanent change of station moves. Beautiful country!

RE: NW RV.Net Summer Rally, Aug 7-8-9,2009

We are just getting home--turned on the computer to 178 new messages! We made a stop at Camping World in Wilsonville. Decided to come straight through the Portland area on I5 instead of I205--was great through north Portland then bogged down badly, but still from the bridge to just south of the main Portland area was only about 30 minutes. Had a great time--so glad we came! Had to represent Oregon!

Actually, Jon, I thought the Excursion was shorter than that. We're only a little over 2 feet longer.

Thanks, all! Our trailer is only 27' so not the problem that some of the longer rigs would have--but the truck is long, unlike Jon's short coupled tow vehicle.
