RE: Secret of Grilling Chicken

Let the chicken set out to take the chill off. I season with whatever I feel like that night. I use a gas grill, putting the middle burner on high and the two outside on medium. I always use a meat thermometer, take it off about 5 degrees from where I want it. I let it set, covered with foil, for about 5 mins while getting everything else ready.
My chicken was always dry until I started using a thermometer.

RE: Cat peeing everywhere

Yes, it is a hassle to deal with. Nothing like walking down the stairs in the morning to step in cat pee, but neither one seems to be in any pain or distress so I won't put them down. I've taken cat #1 to 2 different vets, had all sorts of blood and urine tests done.
I will try the puppy pee pads and try one more vet.

Cat peeing everywhere

I have 2 cats (actually 4, but only 2 causing problems). I have 2 litter boxes, 2 cats use each one and they are kept clean.
Cat #1 is 17 and skin and bones. I've taken her to several vets and none seem to be able to find out why. She will use the downstairs litter box to poop, but pees everywhere else. She will use the litter box, then get out and pee on the floor next to it or somewhere on the carpet. She's been doing this for a couple of years now.
Cat #2 is about 11 and seems to have difficulty seeing. She pees in her litter box upstairs. BUT, she poops on the floor next to the box. She's been doing this for about 6 mos now. This isn't really too much of an issue because the litter box is in the laundryroom and it's easy to pick up and sanitize.
Any suggestions on how to get #1 to pee in the litter box or a designated spot?

RE: artichokes

I trim the top a bit and the bottom, snip off the sharp points. Then I cook them in my pressure cooker with some water and lemon.
I prefer to dip them in lemon butter, my daughter uses garlic butter, the grands use ranch dip, and my niece uses mayo.

RE: what did you name your rig?

Thumper because of the way it looks when following behind it. Sometimes I also call our TT the big white wall that people can't see.

RE: Oatmeal...

I like my steel cut oats toasted before cooking in the pressure cooker. I toast up a quart jar of them and just take from that as needed.
Please, how do you make them. I like the steel cut oats and my pressure cooker, so this should be a winner.
I make mine with milk instead of water and add frozen blueberries. I use either the Quaker Oats Old Fashion or John McCann's steel cut that comes in a can.

RE: Why don't parents...

It's really a different society from when we were raised and from how most of us raised our kids.
Parents today are AFRAID to discipline their kids in public. Kids are taught from preschool on that a swift swat to the rear end is considered child abuse and they need to tell another adult, and keep telling until someone listens.
Many parents of young kids are part of the "ME GENERATION", (that one that we raised). They're too busy working on their own gratification that they can't be bothered disciplining their own kids. As long as the kids aren't bothering them, all is well.
Then you have the mother who is so guilt ridden over working that she goes out of her way to not upset little Johnny. Heaven forbid he be told no. Her life is miserable because the child is in control and there's no control.
I love kids, I really do, but my kids were never allowed to behave like that in public or at home. They were taught from the time they started walking that they stayed at my side with their hands behind their backs the minute we walked into a store. You look with your eyes, not your hands.

RE: Couponing

My daughter and I were just talking about this. I used to really pay attention and shop with coupons. I routinely bought about $400 worth of groceries for less than $100. That was back when the stores doubled the coupons and the coupons were a better deal. Now it seems like you have to buy 2 of the item to use a $.25 coupon.

RE: Oh my gosh, favorite way to eat an avacado

I just finished eating one out of the shell/peel/skin with a dash of salt & pepper.
My favorite way to eat them is between 2 pieces of lightly buttered toast. Or maybe sliced on a hamburger. Actually, I haven't found a way yet that I didn't like them.

RE: Newspaper carrier arrested - beware

Doug4.7, I have a buddy that has 2 very large Rottweilers who like very few people and he keeps them in the house. Burglars came in, dumped the fridge and then took their time cleaning him out. When he came home he found the huge mess and two dogs who had eaten a buffet and then purged multiple times around the house.
Same thing happened with my sister.

RE: Grrr in-law rant.

I have family visiting and they all smoke. They have the courtesy and respect not to smoke in my home. They either go out front or out back to light up.
As for the new found relatives.....my sil found his birth mother about 1 1/2 years ago. I swear they've been on the phone 24/7 ever since, making up for 40 years lost time.

RE: What's happening in your kitchen today/tomorrow?

I'm making Shis-ka-bobs with sirloin, chicken, mushrooms, peppers and onions, served with Long Grain & Wild Rice by Uncle Ben's, tossed salad and fruit salad for dessert. We'll have leftovers tomorrow if there are any left! Enjoy!
What time's dinner. My sister lives in Whitewright and I'll be heading that way in a few months.

RE: Oven Bags

I love the bags. I use them in my big turkey roaster, saves a lot of mess.
I burned the bag to the pan just before Thanksgiving. I couldn't get the burned on bag no matter what I tried. I called Reynolds and they said to take the pan outside, saturate paper towels with ammonia, put it on the burned on bag and let it sit over night. It came right off the next day.

RE: Whipped Cream Recipe Wanted

Here's the best way to stablize whipped cream. I tried it out at Thanksgiving and it was still perfect the next day. I used the liquid from maraschino cherries instead of water.
Ingredients:
•1/2 teaspoon unflavored gelatine
•1 tablespoon cold water
•1 cup whipping cream or heavy cream
•1/2 teaspoon vanilla
•1 tablespoon sugar
Preparation:
In a small ramekin or ovenproof measuring cup, sprinkle gelatin over 1 tablespoon of cold water. Set the container into about 1 inch of hot water in a saucepan and let stand until gelatin dissolves. Remove from the hot water. Set aside for a minute to cool slightly. Whip the cream until almost stiff, then add the gelatin, salt, vanilla, and confectioners' sugar. Continue whipping until stiff. Cover and refrigerate. Beat with a spoon to blend just before serving. Makes about 2 cups of whipped cream.

RE: Hug Your Kids & Grandkids...

I do so every single day.
20 years ago, at this time, I was fighting for my life. I finished my last round of chemo the Friday before Christmas, had major surgery 2 1/2 weeks later.

RE: One Born Every Minute... Sad Story

My fil was a victim of these types of scammers for years before we found out.
A business friend had to cut off his own father from all bank accounts and their property portfolio after he discovered his father was convinced that a particular "business transaction" was real. The elderly are especially at risk and, relative or not, it is more than our moral duty to protect others when a crime is in progress.
We had no idea this had been going on for several years until he had a minor stroke and we decided that we should check into his finances and found a couple of the receipts in his desk drawer.
My fil was convinced that he was winning lotteries and was sending the money to cover the taxes. The majority of the Western Union receipts were for Canada.
