RE: 2WD vs 4WD in Snow

hmmmmm, do not tow in snow or ice? how many of them BIG rigs do I see traveling over the local pass while skiing on the interstate? Not sure how many times I and upwards of 150 others in various and sundry RV's of all sorts had them parked in different ski area's in the NW. About the only rv not seen on any given weekend was a tent trailer or other soft sided rig. %w's ranging from small no slides to 3-4 slide rigs, travel trailers like me, from no to slide times. bed campers, Type A, B and C Motor homes........ As far a 2wd vs 4wd......well, if and where legal, a good set of chains will out do a 4wd alone in most conditions, especially if on the hwy. Otherwise if you have to off road it as some do, then 4wd and chains may be needed. I used to chain up on ave 1-2 times to come home while using my TT as a ski hut, that was more for the downhill leg than the uphill! ALong with the SP had chains required when over 10K lbs......or if caught, my wallet was lightened up to the tune of a couple bens.......chains do not take that long to put on! marty I have a one ton dually 4x4.. I pulled 395 with a short area of a "dusting of snow". The truck was in 4 wheel drive and on flat ground the tires on the truck were slipping. Just letting you know my experience. I grew up learning to drive in the snow. It was un-nerving to say the least.. If there is snow up ahead, I will stop til the roads are clear..If anyone else wants to tow in the snow without chains, let us hear your story. In Southern Ontario it snows and you are not allowed chains on major roads unless "up North" so you stay home or put her in 4x4 and go - easy peasy and Welcome to Canada land of ice and snow except BC where it seems to rain all winter especially if your hosting a big sporting event :)

RE: Power tongue jack ?

For the most part a good deal. I knew one guy who had a refurb unit from them go bad and they replaced it for him. Good customer service will make up for a bad one in the batch once in a while ;) Don't think I'd ever want to be cranking a unit up and down any more to put the WDH on :)

RE: Starcraft end bed latches

I did mine last year, and Shum02 was there watching I think. All the holes were covered up by the the new hardware. I got the parts list from Jeremy626. Yup! Looked just like OEM when it was finished!

RE: Starcraft end bed latches

Backer plates are all that is necessary and regardless something I'd do anyway. I had a fix done on my old Antigua 235SBS with the side bunk and they lag bolt it into the wood frame of the door. Due to having a cabnet beside the bunk my dealer did not want to remove it to bolt it through. Had no issues in 2 years. Get 'er done!

RE: 2WD vs 4WD in Snow

With 2wd engaged in the F350 I can't even make it up my driveway here in Burlington with a good snow. I have one F150 I still have that is 2wd and I will never buy another pickup that does not have 4wd. In camp grounds I'll often throw the transfer case into 4Lo on loose material when I'm backing the rig in and only really have to idle to get it to move, much easier on the transmission as well.

RE: Starcraft end bed latches

Do the latches look like these? http://hortonsonline.com/photos/albums/userpics/normal_IMG_1882.JPG If so, check out this link You can order them directly from Fastech for pretty cheap They are probably the screw in type but these can be retro'd onto the older rigs. Seen it done a few time, helped out once with the install and is an excellent inexpensive mod! 2 out of 5 on the hard skill level

RE: 2011 Duramax 397/765

I'll bet that Dodge plays it cool, or smart and doesn't let itself get sucked into the H.P./torque game and keeps their engine ratings as they are. I think folks are getting tired of these Pi**ing matches between automakers bumping up their power figures. I really hope that Dodge/Chrysler stays miles away from this scenario. If they stay miles away from this scenario, Dodge will stay miles away from sales. x2

RE: 2011 Duramax 397/765

Just a thought, but both Ford and GM were predicted to have more power (400-425 HP) and less torque. I bet they are both sandbagging the horsepower numbers Come on, how much do you really need!?

RE: An F150 to tow my 24' 5er?

No matter what he does, if he exceeds the GVWR numbers on the drivers door post in his province he will be sited by the RCMP. Close does not cut it in BC. The truck more than likely has a GCVWR of 15000lbs and based on the trucks own GVWR of 7200lbs he will easily be within #'s on that truck. The 5.4L will easily handle pulling that much weight in either a 250 or 150. Had an '07 F150 CC with 3:73's until just recently and it easily handled my 7000lb KZ. Good to go and an excellent although not extraordinary deal on the truck.

RE: 5.4L F150 3.73 vs. 3.55

The Max Tow Package come with the 3:73's and is av on the XTR trucks and up, n/a on XLT's. Includes all the regular HD towing package stuff from oversized rad, tranny cooler etc.

RE: Toy Hauler?

StarCraft used to have some nice HTT with a front toyhauler section. Seems looking through their website they no longer have them. Mabe in the used market.

RE: Olympics

Be happy Canada favours multiculturalism, vs. US melting pot. We like to keep the cultures of our settlers, not force them to become all English and French. French influence and history is very strong right through all of the Prairies. Parts of Canada which are quite Anglo historically, ie Newfoundland have welcomed folks from central Europe, soviet emigrants, Vietnam and more. Get used to it. A multicultural country is a more interesting country :C x2!

RE: Roo 233S and F-150

Chuck is correct. If you have a choice go with the 3V 5.4L over the 4.6L. The smaller V8 will NOT save you any gas what so ever. I have one and it get's the same gas mileage as my 3V 5.4L did in my previous '07 F150 towing or not towing. There is nothing wrong with the motor but Ford like everyone else offered it to keep the CAFE rating on the truck decently favourable. Thing is in the real world the 5.4L gets the same gas mileage, just keep your foot out of the throttle ;)

RE: Ontario Parks - Self Fulfiling Prophecy of Extinction

Maybe if we got rid of the union that holds Ont Parks hostage, we could hold off on increases for awhile. You know who they are so you know that is not going to happen. Money is being spend hand over fist to provide power to more and more sites. Maybe they could lay off that for awhile. I agree. Seems though OPP is just following through on what people want and are complaining they don't have. Dumb thing about pricing - In Algonquin's Mew lake in November, with no water anywhere near your site, you pay the same price as you would mid August. Agree 100% but unfortunatly people keep showing up to pay the premium cost? It would seem WTH do we know!

RE: Roo 233S and F-150

3:55's are standard and LS is optional. 3:73's could be ordered with the towing package and came standard with limited slip. The 3:73 with LS would of course be the desired option especially with the 4.6L. It's a good motor and will deliver decent performance towing under 5000lbs. Get over that and you'll be driving in second gear ;)

RE: Ontario Parks - Self Fulfiling Prophecy of Extinction

I don't know how to make it any clearer since you don't seem to be reading or listening to what I've been saying. Yes I am. You want it to be "fair". Define that for us and tell us how it should be done that would make you happy. For the majority of us it is fair and it works , the rest just whine about it, nothing works for everyone. I can point you in the direction of another camping forum where they whine a blue streak about it, so much so that eventually the thread is usually locked. Been going on what 5 - 6 years now? Let me know, I'll PM you the link for the thread.

RE: Personal protection in Canada?

There is no need for personal protection up here. Canada is not a violent country and the average person will never become a victim of crime in their lifetime. If this is true.... No need, for the mounted police, eh? Why do you have them ? traffic Putz http://emoticons4u.com/cartoon/1224.gifOne reason for having the RCMP is to protect the Canadian citizens from the ones who cross the border with intent to break the Canadian laws (smugle contraband to and from) and to work our accidents! They have been in existance and heavily used from the gold rush days when the U.S. citizens went north and got drunk and so on!!:S Bill Like this? Sam Steele

RE: Personal protection in Canada?

Hey Canucks, you who have visited the US in recent years, tell me please. Is the US as awful as these folks would make you believe. Are US residents that nasty? Can't they find something more entertaining than go hunt for folks without 'personal protection'? & I'd bet those are the same ones claiming the US is the greatest country on the planet!! Is this for real? :S I love travelling to the US as do the vast majority of people I know! Have always felt welcome and everyone loves to take my money ;)

RE: Ontario Parks - Self Fulfiling Prophecy of Extinction

For great fear of retaliation from SHUM02.. I will respond. I would prefer to call it a "re-direction" ;) I am a passionate supporter of Provincial/State parks and being involved in a family business I am acutely aware of what it costs to keep an organization such as this viable, relative and economically healthy. We should not take them for granted or always expect that others will pick up the slack regarding funding. Taxpayers on both sides of the border need as many breaks as they can get right now and sometimes with that in mind a "user pay" system makes sence. JMVHO.

RE: Personal protection in Canada?

Leave your "personal protection" at home please. At best some bear spray but I heard one family a couple summers ago had a can go off in their car while they were in it. Heard that wasn't too pretty. I usually only have a Fox 40 whistle with me ;)
