RE: Ford 250 V10

I have an older 2000 V-10 with a 4.30 gearing. I have been towing with it for over six years. The numbers are (on average) 8.25 towing and 14.3 solo. I haven't had any trouble going up or coming down and have been up 10% grades a couple of times. It loves the high rpms. Don't have anything against diesels, they are great, but I wouldn't trade mine for one. Maybe if it ever wears out and I get another TV it might be a diesel, but I doubt it.

The GOOD, BAD, and the UGLY for service -
from *ANY* "Motor Club" (AAA, GS, Allstate, Coach Net, etc.) is *TOTALLY* dependent on the Tow Companies they contract with!
Sooooo - the foregoing comments about who did good or bad are really meaningless.
You may have been in the right place at the right time and vice-versa.
Busy time vs slow time.
You may have been in an area with several contract companies - or few.
Lastly - there may have been tows/service calls that will get priority over you, but of course, you will never be told that (tow company gets paid better!).
Keeping that in mind - go to a tow operator forum - and see who *THEY* like!
(who lo-balls the contracts, how promptly the Motor Clubs pay them, etc)
Real eye-opener.

Absolutely correct. I had GS and had two calls. The first one was great, the second one was a disaster. The fellow came about an hour and a half (probably on another call). Came without the proper tools and couldn't get the lug nuts off. He cut off my hub, chained up the axle and followed me 25 miles to a tire shop. Then, he charged me extra for following me the extra miles (even though it was his fault). I notified GS and that was three years ago. They have never acknowledged or commented.
Coach-Net has answered several calls all with good speed and service. Like the previous poster said, I asked one responder about the various emergency services and they said that sometimes they didn't get prompt payment from some and GS and AAA were among this list. However, they said they always had good relations with Coach-Net and that is why I have stayed with them for going on four years.

I had the same problem and tried many different options. The one that worked for me was Aqua-Kem. It's the blue, thick stuff from CW. I also tried RV Digest-it and both had similar results although Aqua Kem seems to work the quickest and best.
My LED got to where it read 2/3 full even after dumping, but I put 10 ounces of Aqua Kem in the tank (I have a 58-gal tank)and let it set in there until the thing was completely full (I think I even drove from one campground to another when it was 1/2 full). After draining, it read empty and ever since I have used 2-4 ounces in the tank each time and it hasn't blocked up again.

Just some food for thought. For the money, look at a preowned of the higher end brands. Don't worry about the inside appearance. You can completely remodel one for under 5K and that includes furniture. I recently did mine for just under $3,500. Looks like brand new on the inside and I restored the gelcoat on the outside and folks think it's only a year or two old.

RE: Leveling and Jacking Up. Question

Everyone has their own solution that fits them the best. If we are simply stopping overnight and it's off, I pull out the plastic lego blocks and drive up on them. When I stop for several nights and want it as close to level as possible,I put on the rotochoks and pull out my level air bags and level it to dead center and them unhook.

I have a tripod for anyone that will come and pick it up. I put on Plug-it-rights a few months ago and that with my rotochoks, make all the difference in the world. The plug-it-rights are the same thing as JT's, and other strut systems. They will take all the bounce out that the tripod will and more. It also beats lugging the thing around.

What a coincidence....I have a 2007 River Canyon with the very same leak. Carpet gets wet in the left rear corner just to the rear of the slide. I took the window (directly above the wet area) out, no sign of any leak. I had Camping World do a pressure test (had the service on sale) and it appears to be around the slide seal. Hard to determine exactly where, the test was done with the slide closed (in) and the seal is not in view.
When you refer to "corner moulding" what are you refering to ? The seam where the rear cap is attached ?
We just got here (Alamogordo, NM) for the winter so rain leaks won't be a problem again till spring when we go home. I am going to try and get a better look at the slide seal this winter and see if I can find a fix. Keep us posted as to what you find.
Thanks. I believe I will check into that area. Now that you mention it, There is no leak when travelling in the rain, only when parked with the slide out. If I am parked with the slide in, I don't believe I notice a leak.
If I find something I will post.

I added the Trail-air Pin box and suspension over five years ago and I believe that it makes a great deal of difference in not only the ride in the TV, but the contents of the trailer seem to remain in place.

why do folks call them 10 ply?
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, however, the E rating is the same as the old 10-ply tire. With new materials, they don't actually have 10 layers, but have the same load rating as the old 10-ply tire. It's just easier to communicate the idea sometimes by saying 10-ply. Like D range is 8-ply.
At least that's the way it was explained to me.

Leak

Seems I have developed a leak somewhere in the left rear of my fiver. The Carpet is wet (about 1-2" out from the wall and it doesn't seem to be above the bottom of the window) and I suspect inside the wall also is damp. It's in the extreme back left corner. I had it once before and thought it was leaking around the seal of the electric plug in or possibly the other plugs in the area. I replaced all the seals around them and recaulked. That stopped it for the year.
Now I notice damp carpet again.
Any ideas of where to look or other possibilities will be appreciated. Maybe some of you guys have had similar experiences.

I've been pulling a 13K fiver for five years with a V-10 and haven't had any problems. I do have 4.30 rear gears which helps a great deal. However, I originally had 3.72 gears and didn't have any problems with a Cardinal which was close to 11K. Even did it with, (what did he say?) an "older V-10" which was suppose to be a dog. Or something like that.
In other words, like all the rest have said, you will be fine. It's a high revving engine that has adequate torque.

RE: Diesel Back to Gas!

I know it sounds stupid but I am contemplating selling my 07 Duramax CC 4x4. My wife and kids no longer think camping is a priority so I don't see keeping a vehicle which I would use only on occasion. Including insurance and license I pay over $700 per month here in California.
So with that I've thought of selling the diesel and buying a older Ford F-250 (02 - 04) with the V-10. Can anyone give their experience towing with the V-10. It appears to me to be more towing capable then a large displacement v-8.
I love my diesel and it pulls great but I can't justify the expense anymore.

To answer your question, I have towed with a 2-valve V-10 for over 5 years and have gone up and down a lot of hills. Can't see any reason to get rid of it. I have 4.30 rear gears and it hits the sweet spot quickly. As far as mpg I have gotten as low as 7.12 into a strong headwind going up in New Mexico. I have gotten as good as 9.64 on long level roads with no wind. Averaging everything out I get 8.25 on the conservative side. It hits 13.5-14.5 solo.
The way you drive it will influence the mpg and how long it lasts. I keep mine maintained and tow anywhere from 55 to 62 mph. It has 138,255 miles on it and still runs like a rabbit.
Best advice is to get what you want and don't worry about rationalizing it. There will be plenty of experts to tell you what's wrong or right with your decision.

Looks great! Love the "lodge" theme.
How did you do your wainscot? Is that paneling? Wallpaper? Where did you get your border? I would love more details on how you framed your mirror.
Thanks for sharing! We just redid our floors and now are looking walls and windows.
The wainscot is panelling. The border was found in a wallpaper shop in the closeout bin. In case you didn't notice, I'm a flyfisherman.
The mirror is actually the door to the fuse box. It was just framed in the same wood as the cabinets and that was it. Pretty plain. We covered the frame with leftover fabric from the window treatments, then I bordered it on the inside of the mirror with leftover tiles from our kitchen backsplash. Just hotglue and a bit of grout.
Covered the area between the fabric and tile with some small rope upholostry trim and on the inside of the tile finished it up with a line of braid upholstery trim. Found both of those in a fabric shop in their "let's get rid of it" shelve.

5th Wheel Remodel Job

We started a remodel job about a year ago looking for something new without buying a new trailer and posted a few pics of the first jobs. Now that we've finished laying the new kitchen and bath floor, everything is done except new carpet. It's about as finished as it can be.
I must say it has been fun and the whole thing, inside and out including furniture, has come in under $5k. I believe we will find it hard not to look for closeouts and sales on things to put in the fiver.

If you ever get the urge, go ahead and try it. It's a good project and it's one you can take you time on and not put a lot into it.

Use to worry about that myself, but after a few years, I found that I generally can find one to get into and out of just about anywhere and the older stations are generally easier.
Good Advice here:
Don't wait until the last minute. (Maybe start looking at 1/2 full)
Use the Next Exit on the interstates.
Use outside pumps when available. (I've waited for someone to finish at one and ignored the empty inside pumps)
Pick stations more on how you can enter and exit than by gas price.
All of these guys have given you good advice. Don't worry about it too much, you'll always find something.

RE: Oxidation on front cap

I had oxidation on my front cap and simply went to WalMart and bought the marine (boat) oxidation remover, cleaner wax and used it. The first application made a lot of difference and after two weeks I hit it again and even more. After the third time in two months, I had it back to normal and used the marine polish to really shine it up.
For the life of me I can't remember the name, but the products were in blue bottles and were in the boat department.
