US 191 to Chinle, AZ

We are in a 36 foot class A gasser towing a small Toyota. We are leaving the Mesa Verde area in a few days and traveling to Canyon de Chelley. I just plugged the information in our gps and received a message that six miles of our route will be on dirt roads. (I know, I know... don't believe everything your gps tells you.) However, I do want some input on US 191 south of US 160 in AZ. Thanks for any help.

AZ 98

We are in a 36 foot gasser towing a Toyota. In a few days we will be traveling from Monumeny Valley, UT to Page,AZ. Is AZ 98 from 160 to Page a reasonable route?

RE: Canyon de Chelley

Again, thanks for the input. I do want to re-ask one of my original questions. Will we have trouble finding a spot in the CdC campground in early May? I assume not, but since there does not seem to be any where else in the area to camp, I want to be reasonably sure.
After reading everything, we are probably going to stay two nights at CdC. The risks, though possible, seem minimal. It seems like one of the experiences we envisioned when we first decided to become full-time RVers. Originally, we only intended to do the drives. Now we intend to hire a Navajo guide, using the guide's transportation, possibly the trucks. We have two dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, that we will leave in the motor home during the tour.
One more thing, we have two bicycles. Two years ago in a Corps of Engineers campground in NM, one of them was damaged (involving repair in a bike shop), when someone attempted to steal it from the carrier on the back of our car. (It was locked onto the carrier). We decided to leave them behind on this trip.
Thanks for the information and the encouragement.

RE: Canyon de Chelley

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I certainly did not intend to start a debate. I do want to state that I was not concerned about camping on a reservation, and did not state that in my initial question. My reasons for asking questions about safety were due to information I read on RV park reviews. i wanted to get a better sense of what other people thought of the area. Again, thanks for your input.

Canyon de Chelley

We are planning a five-day stay in the four corners area, arriving from Mesa Verde in early May. We have a 35 foot gas motor home and pull a small car. We would like to see both Monument Valley and Canyon de Chelley. We are wondering about two options. Option 1 -- spend five nights at Gouldings in Monument Valley and drive to Canyon de Chelley one day for a long day trip. Option 2: Spend two nights in the Canyon de Chelley campground (dry camping), and then move on to Gouldings for three nights.
Specifically, is the Canyon de Chelly campground safe? Are the sites big enough for our motor home and car? Since the sites are not reservable, are we likely to find a spot in early May?
Any advice is appreciated.

RE: CAMPGROUND IN SCOTTSBLUFF, NE

We stayed in Gering at Robideaux RV park at the end of May and would certainly recommend it. If you're interested in seeing our blog entry from our stay there, here's a link (there are a couple of photos of the park if you scroll down a bit):

Texas Gulf Coast

We are hoping to stop on the Texas Gulf Coast for a few days on our way to the Rio Grande Valley. We have not been there before. We are retirees who would enjoy being on the water with full hookups or no hookups, doesn't matter. Any thoughts on Port Lavaca vs Mustang Island, or other destinations? We travel in a 35 foot motor home and tow a Toyota Matrix. Any place where a dog (leashed) can walk on the beach? Thanks for any advice.

RE: Indianapolis Indiana

Spring can be pretty, but the chances of dicey weather, both in Indy and along the way are greater. Avoid the miserable weeks of July/Aug. Fall is the best time - early Oct. The leaves turn. The humidity is gone. The kids are in school so things are quieter. Unfortunately, there are not many places to camp near Indy. The White River campground (northeast of the city) does flood (probably not an issue in the fall), and you would be going thru quite a bit of slow moving suburban traffic to get to the city. We stay at Glo Wood on I-69 (NE of the city) because of the location (closer to the people we visit) and the full hookup pull thrus, but it is as basic as you can get - camping on uneven gravel in the middle of a field. It is 20-30 min. to the city except during rush hour when that doubles. There is a KOA in Mt. Comfort on the east side of town - not that great. If you want to stay about an hour from town, Brown County State Park (an hour + south of the city) is really nice, but crowded in Oct. due to leaf peepers - electric hookups only. Mounds State Park in Anderson (45 minutes northeast of city) is less hectic - also electric only. We are full-timers who used to live in the Indy area.

RE: RV Routes

We have had the same concerns. We just purchased Rand McNally's new GPS unit designed specifically for RVers. I entered the height, width, and length of our RV. The GPS is not supposed to route us on roads that will not handle us. So far, so good. This particular GPS is SO much better than our old one -- for a lot of reasons.

Missouri River Flooding - Williston ND

We are in a 35 foot motor home (gasser), pulling a small Toyota. Right now we are in the SD Black Hills. Our plans were to go north to the north unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park before heading east on Hwy 2 through ND and MN. We have heard that the campground in Theodore Roosevelt National park has been closed due to flooding, so we might not head that way. A further concern in crossing the Missouri River in Williston ND. Does anyone know the conditions of the river and the bridge at Williston?
We may just head east on I-90 and cross the river in SD on the interstate, and then head north.
Any thoughts/advice are appreciated. Thanks.

Route to Chadron, Nebraska

We are in a 36 foot motorhome (gasser) and pull a small Toyota. Right now we are in the Gering/Scotts Bluff area of Nebraska. We will be moving to Chadron State Park tomorrow. Originally, I was going to take 92 east and then 385 north. However, we noticed that a different route would take us through Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. We would like to take the second route, if it is safe. My concerns are whether the roads are OK for our MH. Does anyone have opinions about Nebraska State Road 29 north from Scottsbluff, and then US 20 east to Chadron? I appreciate any help.
