RE: 6.0 L Ford engine

Lantley,
My truck is a 2004, I put 350,000 miles on my 1st design 1999 7.3. Was happy then, love the 2004 now. Much more truck. I was down for 1 week while this was inconvenient; it was done on my schedule. Besides my truck made 4 200 mile round trips hauling hay with the head gasket leaking into the water jacket and tea kettleing the degas bottle, never missed a beat. When I could afFORD (no pun intended) to be with out it. The dealer took it in and did the work along with a front end job an alignment. Running great now and I got a load (about 18500GCVW) to move this weekend, will post up on results.
As I stated in previous post, the replacement parts correct reliability issues. My tech has never seen repeat HG failure after the new parts are installed. I have also said in past post that there are deals available because of the bad rap. If you like the truck, buy cheap, buy the extended warranty, get the fix within warranty, have lots of extra $ in hand as I did! Keep beating them up guy's I almost have closed a deal on a low mileage 2007 f550
Lariat. 24k on the clock, half sticker price, 4 years and 176k under 100% 0 deductable engine warranty. I’ll take that bet!

RE: 6.0 L Ford engine

Thanks Bruce for clearing it up for me,
Anyone with a 6.0 needs to know a good tech. For that matter any diesel owner needs to know a good tech! If you’re in my area and have a problem I can recommend Dealers with good reputations on this issue and if you prefer a non dealer "Smokemakenscreamerbuilder" that can fix your truck for good I'll share the #'s with you. You pick the one that makes you feel good. I don’t make a dime on any of them but they have taken good care of my problems. There are some very good people in my area and a few that are really dangerous!

"wayward1, you really need to go to www.powerstrokehelp.com and learn the truth about the 6.0L PSD."
Been there done that! Glad I went. Got a great deal on a great truck. Made the good decision about extended warranty and have had my truck run great for 80k. Got it fixed under warranty and now expect to have a long happy relationship with this truck and Ford.

"NONE were modified in any way and all were still within warranty period." ... "we're very sorry we just can't find the reason for the anti-freeze coming from your exhaust pipe, but bring it in if it does it again." "That doesn't in any way sound like Ford manning-up in my books."
This is a dealer thing if true, go else where and report to Ford! I've talked to many in parks and job sites. I hear the good the bad and the ugly about all. I am only trying to give the other side of the story on the 6.0. Read all my post.

RE: 6.0 L Ford engine

You both got me wrong! The early trucks are out of warranty, they lasted through the warranty. The one's that did not were fixed or bought back. Not everyone is happy. I did my due diligence and purchased extended warranty on something that "could be a problem". I took a chance as anyone that has ever bought anything did when they laid down the cash. Ford has not turned any legitimate warranty work away. If they had in this day and age we would have heard "class action by now". IH and Ford disagree, Ford is now building there own power plant, a good idea and I hope it turns out good. I would have been nice to have built in country but I understand the global marketplace. Let’s hope it’s good for consumers and the environment. I own Dodge, Ford, Chevy, VW, HD, John Deere, Case, Grade All, Mack, Cat, Volvo, and on and on. I'm not advocating any business fail or any business that brings $ to any taxpayer or anyone else fail foreign or domestic. I just get DSAT of every time some one says Ford 6.0 there is a rash of responses that don’t address the success stories around this issue! And most come from someone that drives something else! I have seen the cabs off of every brand as it makes engine work sooooo much easier. They come off easily with the current connections for electrical harnesses. Head bolts and gaskets can be changed with out cab removal as some of (your) sources have said. It's not just a Ford thing! I try to bring fair and realistic perspective to the never ending 6.0 bashing party by "others" to inform potential buyers of this product to a “success story”
Please don’t read into my post! Don’t put your word in my mouth!

RE: 6.0 L Ford engine

In my pocket book it’s all relevant; I’ve bought and used up them all. It isn’t just my opinion, with out the bail out both would be out! That’s pure economics, not mechanics! I will stay with Ford until I see something better for ME, that's being a prudent consumer! Good luck with your Dodge, I hope it serves YOUR needs well!
BTW Ford has not refused anyone that was within warranty and did not alter their truck. The worst cases were bought back! That's Man Up in my book!

RE: 6.0 L Ford engine

Government Motors (GM) cost me and all others billions. Same with Chrysler, who with out Cummins and the taxpayer would not even be selling trucks right now. Ford sold the most so I'm sure there problems account for more in number. Ford has "Manned Up" and taken care of my problems (and many others) and offered me a way to protect myself for an additional 100k and 2 years at a reasonable $ with out taxpayer help! The way I was just treated by Ford Motor Company when my HG failed will keep me loyal for a long time. Stay in you Dodge and be happy, I hope you never have a problem. I'll stay with my Ford!

RE: 6.0 L Ford engine

Long and short of it:
1. Get an Oasis report from a Ford dealer on the truck you are considering. Look for trouble!
2. If you find a truck that interest you and you are going to do the deal, negotiate as part the extended warranty on the engine at least.
3. Follow the maintenance book to the letter.
PM me for more information if you like.
4. Dont listen to the Dodge Boys

RE: Trip from Maine to Vancouver, Ca via Canada Hwys

"Canadian Prairies are boring as they are in the US"
Those are some of my most favorite places! You just can’t see the beauty or meet the people at 70 MPH on the super slab! I’ve crossed Kansas and N&S Dakota, Nebraska Oklahoma and Texas on two lanes in the camper and on the bike. Took an 18 day bike trip to Red Lodge Montana in 2006 and spent little time on the interstate. Will do again the next time I have time! Canada is on the list but I’ll have to make it to retirement before that trip the way things are going now!
BTW To the OP, please post up with your trip report and Welcome!

RE: lifetime mileage on a diesel ?

RBabb,
What you are missing is I have $30,200 in this truck besides the acceptable wear things you list, my upgrades to suspension systems, and fuel and oil! Most folks started between 40 and 50 K with there new truck. I still have 2 years and 110,000 miles of 100% 0 deductable engine warranty backed at any Ford dealer in the world and no bale out. If you have close to 100k on original ball joints on any Dana 50 you need new ones and just dont know it yet. In two years or 100,000 more miles well do the math and see where the others are with input cost and maintenance. Also I’m 6’2 and 300#. I just don’t fit well in a Dodge or Chevy. Besides More room and payload, I like the look of the SD better. Not to mention a HD platform like ladder frame and leaf springs at 4 corners. I am warming up to the coil set up as the prices are getting beat down and they have proven to be tough. Don’t get me wrong, not knocking Dodge (Cummins), I’m hunting a donor truck to repower my 1979 K30 Dooley 4X4 now, a 12 valve Cummins if I can find one. And can’t forget to mention I bought GM all my life until the 1999 F350. At that time Chevy’s front end in 4X4 just could not cut what I do with a truck and still cant. The IH 7.3 was a no brainer! Also ran a V10 Dodge and put more front end parts in it than anything I ever owned.
Just pointing out the deals that can be had by someone that looks past the usual chin music and does their due diligence.

RE: Beach camping

Me SRW. Rears do get warm but that’s traveling 10 to 20 miles on hot sand. Nothing to get too worried about. Done it many times and still got very good life out of the tires. Got no hotter than running at full highway speeds with same load in sunny FLA.:C

RE: Beach camping

Bumpy,
You must have seen my air chart; those are the exact #'s I use on my rig at Assateaque. Started getting bogged down in some soft sand at the tide line once. Got out and dropped another 5# out of the rear, backed up about 4' put her back in drive and went on about my business. 21# was real low with the TC though it got me out and back to the pumps.

RE: lifetime mileage on a diesel ?

OK Hear it from a Ford owner;
Bought new July of 1998 as a new 99 7.3 F350 SRW CCLB Auto 4X4 Lariat: Sold at 350,000miles. Lots of tires and brakes, 1st trans went 225,000, second were 20,000, third is still in at 425,000. 1 WP, 1 ALT, 1 CPS, 1 belt tensioner and belt. Several batteries. Sold truck to friend and neighbor. Were still friends.
2004 6.0 bought at 16,000 miles used Dec 2006 for 28,500 (It was a 50K truck sticker price) I’m the 2nd owner. F350 SRW CCLB auto 4X4 Lariat now has 95,000 miles. Paid for extra 2 years and 100,000 miles warranty (1700.00). Lots of tires 1 set or front and rear pads got 75k out of first set). 1 turbo and 1 EGR valve both 100% under warranty no deductable. I saw the cab off my truck last week for head gaskets under 100% no deductible warranty and will pick it up today. While there got 4 new ball joints and seals for 1100.00 (same cost as the few sets in my 1999 and the first on this truck). I tow/haul heavy and do my own maintenance. The 2004 is a lot better truck than the 99. Lots more power and better trans. Neither ever left me stranded on the road.
Keep beating up the 6.0 guy's I’m Hunting a 2007 and your driving the prices down for me! Enjoy your new DPF and urea! There are 6.0 deals out there don’t be scared off by a non believer!
BTW the tech told me he has never seen a truck come back for head gaskets twice (with or with out aftermarket studs), I'd say the fix gets the problem solved! Getting it fixed under warranty is the key!

RE: lifetime mileage on a diesel ?

"Beware of any Ford truck with the 6.0 diesel. Volumes of bad publicity have been posted on the diesel forums about the problems encountered with this engine!! Ford made a significant mistake in replacing the 7.3 with the 6.0. It has driven lots of us old Ford diehards to Cummins and Duramax. There are many Ford diesels now available on used car lots with a 100K or just slightly over that. The reason being that the 100K warranty expired!!! The new owners will be on thin ice!! I know of several people who had bad experiences with this engine. Our next door neighbor had an o3 Lariat and it was nothing for it to be in the Ford garage over a week at a time. I believe the 03 and 04 model years were the worst. So do your research and read all the forums before you buy this dog. Some but not many have had good luck with this engine. I would be afraid of it!!"
Spoken like a true dodge boy! If you what to know about Fords, ask owners of Fords!
