RE: CHOOSING A CAMPER FOR A "HEAVY DUTY" FORD F 150

My 2010 SuperCab, 4X4, 6-1/2 bed F150 has the older 5.4L engine and an GVWR of 7700. With the driver and a full tank of gas, the unloaded truck is 6000 pounds.
My Jayco pop-up has a weight sticker of 1100#. Fully loaded with gear, food, propane, water, etc., the combo weighs 7600#. So, the loaded camper totals 1600 pounds.
It drives okay and stops okay. However, the F150 definitely knows it's there.
Lighter is better.

RE: TC sitting for long time, how to put back in service?

Basically test every system just like you were camping in it for a week. If any thing needs fixed, you'll soon find out.

RE: Boondocking pet peeves, I really hate it when...

Hands down, noisy neighbors are the worst.
However, I'm with DJ on this one. You couldn't pull a 5er into the places where we boondock. In fact, I wish the roads were in worse shape.

RE: Tell me about for camper and SRW truck

We had a F350 SRW with a 3000# 9-1/2 foot Alpenlite.
If I had it to do over again, I would have stayed with an 8 foot camper that fit in the bed without hanging over, and try to keep the dry weight (including options) under 2400# or so (under 2000 would be even better).
Fully loaded, we were 11,400# on a 2003 F350. Yeah, it can be done. I wouldn't do it again though.

RE: Will three weeks be enough?

No. Driving the "scenic" back roads is for retired full timers. If you are trying to see Yellowstone and the Tetons for the east coast in 3 weeks, you need to get on the road and GO!
Been there, done that. www.raincityhome.com/RAWH/index.htm
With the interstates, you will spend more time at your destination and less time on the highway.

RE: New to Truck Campers - question of balance...

The camper won't fall forward. Instead, the floor will drop out. That Jayco has flimsy floor support and it really isn't the right camper to use off the truck. Don't believe me. Ask Google.

RE: leak in extended cabover

Check the marker lights and EVERY seam anywhere near the front. Water can leak in one spot then travel sideways under or though something before it pools up somewhere else. The leak isn't always where you think it is. Check everything. Better yet, re-caulk everything (pay $1200 bucks and have a reliable RV dealer redo everything). You won't regret it.

Bilsteins.
If you can't get the Ranchos, you're not missing anything.
In 11 years, we're had 4 truck/camper combos and tried Bilsteins, KYB, and Rancho shocks. The Bilsteins were far and away the best.

RE: F-150 with 3.5 ecoboost in a camper package

The heavy duty payload package is going to be stiffer than the regular F150 suspension. My camper is 600 pounds lighter than yours and it's maxed out the truck.

RE: TC title

Washington is funny. Large campers that block the tail lights definitely require title and licensing. Pop-ups can pass for "shells" or canopies and you can get away without title or license. I don't know the law, but that is the practice.
(I went ahead and licensed mine just to be on the safe side. It was unlicensed when I bought it. The license is $10 a year --- A small price to pay for NOT being unnecessarily hassled with a traffic stop while on vacation).

RE: Ford Ranger & Torklift tie downs

A good welding shop could custom fabricate tie downs for you. We see a lot of custom or home-brew tie downs. It's not rocket science.

RE: CAMPING IN WA $^^#**^

An hour or so from Bellingham is tough, really tough. I discussed this thread with my wife and we both think your best bet is over the border in BC. of course, it's probably over a hour drive and the self defense options are problematic.
Have you scouted out boondocking opportunities off Hwy 2? The snow and road closures bung things up in the winter. As others have pointed out, there are a number of wildlife refuges in EWA --- all of them great winter destinations. More than a hour though.

RE: Bikes on front rack for 5000 miles - anything left?

If you drive highway speeds in heavy rain you will force water into all the bearings --- crankshaft and wheels. You will ruin your bike if you ride off without repacking the grease. Don't ask me how I know this. I will never again mount bikes in a front rack.

If ya gotta have a "campground", try Howard Miller Steelhead Park in Rockport. Great campground, and a short drive for you.

RE: CAMPING IN WA $^^#**^

Dude, You have a truck camper.
I can tell you that WA state has the best camping in the country. My wife and I went out once a month, year round, for 7 years and never ran out of beautiful places to camp.
My advice: Think outside the park.
