RE: Best truck to haul a triple slide Eagle Cap 1165?

F550 min. F450 has little more payload than an F350. Built more for towing. Check out BKA0721's rig!!! :C

Qts to cubic feet?

Been looking at 12 volt coolers. Presently have a gas 2.3 that can be replaced with a Dometic 12v 2.2. Not bad. But I went to Engel and they rate their fridges with qts. The biggest one they make is 60 qt. But I don't know if it is dry or liquid qts. The pic of their 60 qt is very tiny. Smaller than my 43 qt Engel chest. Very confused!!!!

RE: Slippin' and a Slidin'.....fixed!!!

Hey DJ ! Great pictures, how were the roads going up to silver city? are they gravel or paved? Are there places to camp around it? Being from WA you would want to come in from the Jordan Valley side. Unfortunately it is the worst of the two roads. No 4x4 stuff but rough with a lot of wash outs. Single lane with few pullouts. Fortunately this has the most camp spots right on the creek. I spent the night in town at their little campground. Tables, rings and an outhouse and FREE!!!!! http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo194/deejis-photos/IM002445.jpg http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo194/deejis-photos/IM002446.jpg

RE: Slippin' and a Slidin'.....fixed!!!

Oh she's a pretty rig DJ. Nice to know she won't be moving around too much. Is there room on the brackets to move the rear jacks up so the feet are even with the camper? And of course you know that with the new Tundra type you'll need solar if you don't have it. They too are hostage to the outside temps but not the same degree as the gas. Degree, that was a fridge joke...ok moving on I think I will just have to pull the rear jacks off for the serious stuff. The lower bracket is pretty close to the bottom now. I was surprised the Tundra was such an energy guzzler compared to my Engle. But then that is also comparing a stand up to a chest.

RE: Slippin' and a Slidin'.....fixed!!!

DJ, I used a small o2 fan blowing up over the coils. I added a 3 volt regulator and a couple of resistor in the battery area and ran it from the 12 volt system. I think the fan was about $6 at wallyworld. This has a factory fan but never came on. Must be on a temp control and never got hot enough.

RE: Slippin' and a Slidin'.....fixed!!!

I have considered building some camper guides similar to yours. One thing to watch out for is lowering the camper down when it is too far off center to one side. The tapered guides will force the camper over while the jack feet are still firmly on the ground. This can put a lot of stress on the jacks and the jack attachment points on the corners. As long as the camper is pretty close to centered when you begin lowering it; shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for posting. Brad Thanks Brad, I'll be careful!!!!

RE: Slippin' and a Slidin'.....fixed!!!

DJ,i thought you were using the Engle for your refrigeration needs.did you run out of space on the Sunlite or just desire to utilize a fridge in the existing location.just gotta love the Engle, just gotta hate ALL absorption fridges. I still have the Engle. There is just no floor space for it in this camper like the old Northstar. My Dealer called and said it would be $1180 to install the Dometic 12 volt. :E It is 2.2 cubic feet and draws 3.5 amps. That is quite a lot compared to my Engle at .07-2.5 on max freeze.

RE: Tires in Idaho or Montana?

Another vote for LS. Service can not be beat. But that may not matter after you are home. Like mentioned before, call ahead and they can have your tire waiting for you. Also, if you have the right size it would be a good time to go with LT tires!!!

Slippin' and a Slidin'.....fixed!!!

Just got back from maiden voyage with new to me 07 Sunlite. First impression, it is not as sturdy or heavy built as the old 88 Northstar. But is has a potty with 5 gallon tank, water heater with 14 gallon gray tank. Northstar had none of these. Thanks to Ford for the deep boxes I had to raise the camper to clear. I wanted to go as little as possible, just enough to clear things so I used 2x4's flat wise. Won't be enough clearance under the TC for much other than a coiled up piece of dirty water hose!!! I was on some very rough roads, the kind that no matter how slow, violently pitched the TC to one side or another. Even with the rubber mat the front slid clear to the left where the right front tie down nearly gouged my truck!!!! So I removed the front 2x4. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo194/deejis-photos/IM002450.jpg And replaced it with this. http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo194/deejis-photos/IM002451.jpg The 4x4 across the front holds the camper back 3 1/2" to clear my tail lights from hitting the rear drop of the camper. Everything else worked good except for a plumbing issue. Water leaking behind the furnace. Going into the shop next week for that. I can't stand on my head and work on these things anymore!!! Oh, and the typical worthless gas fridge. Held 40 at 60 degrees outside but when the temps got into the 80's the fridge climbed into the 50's. :M I'm researching a Dometic Tundra 12 volt. Those things work so good!!!!! Here is a couple pics of my trip. RE: Pros/cons between these two TCs please

Hmmmmmm.....my 01 CTD 2500 had 1800# payload. Had I put 3500 springs under it would of then brought it up to 2900#. Is that what you did? Anyway, another vote for Northstar!!!!

RE: Tell me about for camper and SRW truck

I would venture a guess that many many many TCs are overweight. A few grossly overweight. I was there once. 2001 Dodge CTD 2500. Payload 1800#. Really? I put an 8' Caribou on it that was 2600# dry. It handled just fine with no mods. I am on the other side of the line now with my current set up. 1000# UNDER payload. But I do a lot of off road.

RE: Boondocking pet peeves, I really hate it when...

Hands down, noisy neighbors are the worst. However, I'm with DJ on this one. You couldn't pull a 5er into the places where we boondock. In fact, I wish the roads were in worse shape. no matter noisy inconsiderate jerks will find you in the deepest depths of Africa much like a thief will find a way around the strongest locks, security systems, etc. This is true and I have been "invaded" by other 4x4 TCs and Jeeps. However the folks that usually put that much time and effort into getting there are ones I end up sharing a campfire, beers and 4x4 lies!!!! :B

RE: Boondocking pet peeves, I really hate it when...

Some one parks and sets up camp 10' away from you with RV full of screaming kids, a large commercial generator, and the kids and animals are running loose all over the place. Amen! I really don't mind someone 20' away but one year there was a group of 5 RV's all with kids, dogs, and loud music. Then . . . wait . . . the kids were rafting down the creek behind us and none of the adults from their group was watching. Now, this is no slow ordinary creek, but a snow fed, swift running creek. Now, imagine being here then all of a sudden, melee breaks out! BTW - creek is deeper than it looks. http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh119/ReneeG_photo/DSC01243.jpg height=000 width=450 We've got to get you out of that 5er and into a TC!!!! Earlier this week in SE OR. :C http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo194/deejis-photos/IM002438.jpg http://i375.photobucket.com/albums/oo194/deejis-photos/IM002424.jpg

RE: Boondocking pet peeves, I really hate it when...

One time we went antelope hunting out in the middle of the Wyoming desert with no trees and just 3 ft. high sagebush. We had been there one night, already. It was just about an hour after sundown of the 2nd night, and it was dark. We had our lights on and a campfire , when we saw vehicle lights x2 coming toward us. All of a sudden the 2 rigs pull up on the other side of our campfire about 60 feet from our trailer. Without a word the people set up camp right next to us, but at least stayed on the far side of their rigs. The next morning we could see they were from California. Go figure..... Oh! Did I say thats what I hate when I'm boodocking? If they were from Wyoming they would have brought their rifles and kept you up all night with gunfire which was what I experienced on my last trip to Shoshone. .

RE: Do you travel wet or dry?

If you can feel a difference the way your truck handles with 30 gallons of water it is either psychological or you need a bigger truck!!! Do you feel the same with 30 gallons of gas on board? :h

RE: Boondocking pet peeves, I really hate it when...

I voted seeing another person. When I boondock I use the true meaning of the word, way out there with rough hard trails to get there. I'm not boondocking if I am where a family RV can pull in and park beside me. That's just dry camping!!!! :)
