RE: carriage rubber roof

Try Protectall, it cleans the black streaks off the sides of my 04 Cameo roof. I heard some are using Murphy's Oil soap also.

RE: rubber roof

If you don't want black streaks keep the gutters clean and have drain spouts....AGAIN the membrane is designed to have that "sluff" left alone NOT removed. HOWEVER...if you have a TPO roof washing is fine as it does not sluff off since it is vinyl

RE: Cleaning TT

From my experience, the best way to get rid of black streaks is too just keep the trailer clean and waxed. For me, I typically wash the trailer after every trip, using just dawn/ivory soap and brush. I wash the epdm roof two times a years using same product, but only gently, don't "over scrub". For wax, I used to use Meguiars liquid carnuba as it was very easy on and off. I have since changed to Turtle Wax Ice! This is the best and can be used on just about everything including the plastic trim, it does not leave a white residue and the best part... It is really easy and not weather dependent. You can use in direct sunlight, do the entire vehicle in one shot, let sit for 15 minutes or so, then wipe off and quick buff and thats that. Easy squeazy and makes the black streaks come right off. Seriously, I can wash and wax the rv in a couple of hours and not feel wiped out.
Of course I live in rural USA, so if my tt sits in the driveway nobody cares... In fact, nobody cares if I work on any of my vehicles in the driveway and if they do, they are usually concerned with how they can help!

RE: rubber roof

The only thing I ever put on my rubber roof is powdered spic-n-span. It does not contain the petro chemicals that are bad for the roof. Disolved powder does a nice job and just add a little dry on hard to clena spots.
DO NOT scrub it hard to get it white. just knock the film off it so you avoid the black streaks. I do mine just once a year when I get ready for our first trip of the season.

While I wax/polish my rig each spring, the black streaks come off during that process.

RE: Black Streak remover, easy

Most anything will remove black streaks that have NOT been sun baked on for months and months. Catch em early and they almost fall off but wait a year and you may need to learn to like them :)

RE: First class C should I increase our budget?

i also think its hard to get exactly what u want the first time around because its hard to know exactly what u want until you live in the thing for a while and see what works and what doesnt.
In my first RV, I found that the u shaped dinette worked great because it allows a full sized adult to sleep on it and it is comfortable, so I really wanted that when I traded up. I liked the length of my original rv, but not having a full rear bedroom didnt work at all because it was hard to get out of the corner bed at night to go to the bathroom. The bathroom door was on a slide rather than a regular door, and my kids had trouble working it. The rubber roof leaves black streaks whereas a fiberglass roof does not. My first RV had lots of storage but not enough counter space. Didnt really find these things out until we took several trips in it. So I went to upgrade the mattress and while looking at different mattresses, I happened upon an RV that had a lot of other things that I wanted that corrected these issues and ended up buying he new unit instead of just the mattress.
buying used saves u on depreciation, so it might be easier to trade up if u trade in . my trade cost me an arm and three legs, but it was worth it.

RE: hand waxed a tt

Do the roof now! then just rinse off the trailer when your done. in the end the wax will make it very easy to keep the black streaks off the sides of the trailer.

RE: Ohio Rally Spring Rally, May 11th to 13, 2012

Just spent last 2.5 hours washing roof and slide out covers. What a pain. That was the one thing that Newmar really did right was they used a TPO roof that did not mold and cause black streaks. Huge step backwards on this EPDM roof. I was in a place a few years back that was just off the Berlin main drag. Think it was called Farmstead. Randu

RE: Spic & Span plus Bleach for Roof Cleaning?

If I don't clean the roof, I get serious black streaks down the sides of the TT. Maybe it's not much of a problem in sunny CA.

RE: streaks from black streak remover

Two days ago I washed and waxed my trailer. I pre-treated most of the black streak areas with Awesome, and used a soft brush with regular car wash stuff to finish it off. I realized I missed a small spot while waxing, and accidentally found a MUCH better way to remove the black streaks! I found that the Nu Finish I was using cut through the black streaks like a hot knife through butter! Obviously I changed out the cloth to avoid transferring dirt to clean areas, but I think it worked even better than Fantastic cleaner. Your mileage may vary, but I'd suggest trying it in a small area to test it out. But it's something to try for those spots...

RE: Brit TEK

Here's a bit of info... on the Fiberglass vs membrane roofs.
And from Dicor-"The DICOR BRITE TEK Roofing System is the most technically advanced roof product on the market today. Some of the advantages of DICOR BRITE TEK over rubber are 1) 350% greater puncture resistance, 2) Almost 2 times the adhesion to the roof, 3) Almost half the weight of rubber, 4) Contains only 3% fillers versus 35% filler content in rubber means no black streaks on the side of the unit after every rain. 5) Extreme resistance to chemicals, resists attack by algae, fungus, acid rain and most chemicals. DICOR BRITE TEK makes recreational vehicles quieter by eliminating roof rumble and noise from wind, rain and hail. It assures a water tight roof that is maintenance free and saves energy through its heat reflecting characteristics. The superior performance or DICOR BRITE TEK is assured by the manufacturers 12 year warranty."
It all depends if you want to spend several thousands on the one piece fiberglass roof!

RE: Fiberglass roof cleaning. White residue on MH.

Gang,
I must be missing something here. We've owned four different motor homes. The first two were aluminum roofed class C rigs. The first, a '79 Dodge Four-Star, had a very week, barely able to hold a body, thin aluminum skinned roof. The second, an '89 Ultra with an aluminum single sheet, flat roof. Both of those never produced any streaking of any type on the sides of the coach. We did have some black streaks here and there but, no one could guarantee that the roof(s)caused them.
The third rig, a '99 Fleetwood Bounder 34V, had a rubber roof. That one would produce some streaks but, not too many, and mostly black.
Now, the present rig we have is an '04 Itasca Horizon 36DG Diesel with the 330 CAT. It has a fiberglass roof. I've never seen any streaking from that roof at all. And, we've been in plenty of rain storms, drizzles and the like. I'd been wanting to wax this roof ever since we purchased this rig, almost a year ago. I just never got around to it. Been busy with other issues on it.
Well this thread inspired me to get to work on it. I started to wax it today and quickly found out I needed a bit more than wax. So, I broke out the buffer and, some cutting compound. Well now, that made a serious difference. As you see in the pics below, you can tell the sections that have been done and the ones that haven't. If you look closely, you'll see in the section that's been done, a reflection of the antenna tower, and in another, you'll see the reflection of the tubing that the cover over the motor home is made with.
You'll also see blotchy sections of what looks like stain or paint or grease or other stuff. What it is, is silicone that the air heads from the factory and or after market installers of the Kind Dome used to seal all the connections and mounts. The problem is/was, they got it all over that roof. Like little kids would do.
I had to scrape that all off then, buff out the roof. I've got about 4 hours into right now and I'm just a hair over half done. But, what an amazing difference. This roof has never been touched. It wasn't all that bad but, it needed some serious labor to get to a point that it will not have to be touched again for as many years as it has already been alive.
Now, I'm not trying to hijack Pogoils thread, just showing him that with some labor, a fiberglass roof can look and be incredibly nice. And, that finish will last a long time. I wouldn't put paint on this roof is someone paid me to do it.
Yes, it's work, and a lot of it but, I won't have to touch it for at least a couple of years, especially since this rig is covered 24/7 unless we're in it and using it.

RE: RV/Marine Gutters... anyone use them?

Our Georgetown has no gutters at all. Black streaks down the sides are an issue. I was thinking aluminum J-section material, aligned just below the roof-to-side seam and attached with high-strength double-sided adhesive tape aided by a few well-sealed screws.
Take a look at Eze Gutters Color choices are ultra white, off white and black.

RE: Washing to remove stubborn stains ???

Try Awesome from the dollar store. Works really well on black streaks. Might want to dilute it with water and not use full strength. Good stuff and only a dollar.
x2 Awesome is awesome.
Nice I just tried it out for a small section and it works great (awesome). I assume you just rinse it off with water, or soap/water?
