RE: Eternabond

You can put 303 on the membrane roof...it wouldn't hurt anything. But it is not recommended by the companies that manufacture the roofing material such as Dicor.
As a matter of fact, they don't like the use of any coatings.
It's simply not needed, as the roof is already protected from UV/Sun Damage.
My thought is this.
1. The extra UV protectant will help keep the coated UV on longer.
2. Less buildup of the minerals on the roof will keep the black streaks down and less cleaning needed.
Just my thoughts.
I'm with you on these thoughts. I find that the roof doesn't get dirty as quick with the 303 on there. I think it rinses off better when it rains.
I have put Eternabond on a new TT. It was on the skylight. I had to do an emergency fix of a leak. Had I waited to get it to the dealer and them fix it the next day, there would have been damage. But as soon as it is out of warrantee, I will be applying Eternabond to some other things. I will go ahead and put Eternabond around the roof vents. I replaced those with Fantastic Fans.
My fiver has Eternabond on a number of things on the roof. The oldest up there is on the slideout. That has been there almost four years now, but is rarely exposed to the elements. The other stuff has been there for two years now. It is holding up fine.

RE: Newbie Roof Questions

Fiberglass is the longest lasting and probably the strongest. Some have a gelcoat finish and some are painted with a clearcoat as a topcoat.
I am not aware of any motorhomes being built with aluminum roofs but I could be wrong.
Monaco and Tiffin have had a few problems with their fiberglass roofs on some late models but I do not know to what extent.
Winnebago has had some problems with their fiberglass roof as well, some of them pretty serious.
Recent Discussion
Personally we've had aluminum, EPDM rubber, and Brite Tek. Aluminum was ok but it does draw the heat and you can hear every rain drop. I like hearing the rain to some extent, but it gets old after a while. EPDM chalks, causing the dreaded black streaks. As soon as you clean it it all happens again. I'm not a fan. I AM a fan of Brite Tek. Simple, tough, quiet, virtually maintenance free, and simple to repair should something happen. On our '00 Dutch Star I needed to get through the Brite Tek (doing a project); it took a brand new razor blade with a fair amount of effort to get through it. We're on our 3rd coach with Brite Tek and I see no downside at all.

RE: Cleaning TT

Stop playing with black streaks. There may be other products that work, but I doubt any work as well at Reliable brand RV cleaner. Spray on, wipe off. Literally! You can also mix it with your wash water if you want, but I find it more effective to use straight. Once the rag gets saturated, just wiping usually takes most of them off.
After I get the streaks off, I use Turtle Zip wax car wash and a soft brisle RV brush to wash the whole thing. Additionally, I try to get at least one good coat of wax on per season. Rain X or Turtle make two easy spray on, wipe off waxes which can be used even when the trailer is still wet after a wash. My system has been pretty effective and quick, and keeps the shine going. Almost five years of continuous weather exposure, even over winter, and it still looks pretty good (except the decals, of course)
Washing out the roof gutters, gutter spout extentions, and a good wax job now and then, go a long way to making black streaks a thing of the past.
I agree! I use the Reliable. It is available on line. Reliable I use all their products! I pour the Reliable cleaner in a bucket of water and the wash with wax in it works great! I use it on my car too. I use their spray wax and once a year i use their restoring wax.

RE: Eternabond

You can put Eternabond on the seams any time you wish, but wait till the RV manufacturers warranty is done (usually a year). As said, sometimes the RV Manufactuers get testy during the warranty period about what they consider modifications.

The white layer on top of the black membrane IS the UV protectant, and it is made to sacrifice itself and "slough off" to protect the roofing material. Thats what the "white streaks" or "black streaks" you see on the side of your RV after a rain are.
You can keep the roof clean, but you don't have to be fanatic about it like some seem to like to do. It's not a hospital operating room floor after all!

RE: new camper needs some love

But clean well with a polishing / cleaning compound before sealing it. Wouldn't want to seal the black streaks, would you? ;-)

RE: Started PV installation today :)

Thanks, ...your right, just checked and they are 5/16". No loss, I found them in one of the many coffee cans around the garage full of nut's/bolts, fasteners, fittings, etc. Back they go. Any idea where to find the tinned #4 3/8" connectors? Grainger? Marine Store?
I guess hard work pays off. Spent last weekend scrubbing the roof, cleaning bird crap, the dreaded black streaks, and waxing. Not as much enjoyment as the PV install.
I'll cover the panels when I connect everything and go "live"? Panels say "Do Not dissconnect under load"
The Rogue manual doesn't say in which order to connect the wiring (PV first or battery first?), only says to hook up the temp. sensor and batt. voltage sensor before powering the unit.

RE: Washing the TT

In reference to the roof, keystone's Owners manual says:
"The rubber roof is a polymer membrane that will not rust or corrode and is very strong and durable. Other than periodic washing, the rubber roof material itself does not require maintenance or coatings."
I just use dawn dish soap and water. As for black streaks I use Camcos Black Streak cleaner and it seems to work fine for me.

RE: Washing the TT

A few years ago I used some commercial black streak remover on the TT. Some ran down over a decal and removed the color in the decal.
After that I used a paste wax that removed the black streaks while rubbing on the wax.

RE: Washing the TT

Try using cleaners you already have around the house to remove the black streaks. If all else fails, Magic Erasers have always worked on tough jobs for me.

Washing the TT

So we very carefully maneuvered the TT in front of our house today (very tight neighborhood). I got it backed about halfway down the road when a large moving truck rounded the corner coming out of the neighborhood. Pulled back out to let him by. Backed back down to the house. Lined it up right against the curb. Lots of weird looks from curious neighbors (HOA doesn't allow trailers). Then we went to work. After about 4 1/2 hrs of scrubbing the TT and another half hour scrubbing the truck, it looks pretty good. Unfortunately though, I was not impressed with the camco products. We used the camco RV wash and wax, camco black streak remover and camco roof cleaner. Trailer still has black streaks we couldn't get off.:( This trailer is only a year old. Any suggestions? Also is there anything we should put on the roof to protect it from UV rays, weather etc or just keep an eye on the caulking and wash periodically (it is an EPDM roof I believe).
Trailer still dirty:

RE: Anyone loading a small car in their haulers???

Nice looking TH. I like the full body paint.
I had a 362 and loved it but the bedroom/bathroom layout was better for me with the Voltage. I may need a truck like yours to pull it though! :B Mine feels fine with it but loading is around max. I'm hoping the paint will hold up. It stays in a garage when not in use but I couldn't keep the black streaks off the white Fuzion.
