RE: Help with TT selection

fabfam4. from your original post, it's hard to say how large you can go with a camper. Reason I mention this is you list that "too large to fit in our garage" a few times. This may be a larger issue as the taller, longer, or wider the trailer, the less chance of it fitting in a garage. As for a tow package, most of the SUV's I worked on when I worked for an RV dealer, came with no wiring, no coolers, no hitches, etc. The dealers would often put a trailer hitch and a T1 Plug in 4 Way connector for trailer lights and call it a "tow package" for an additional $500 to 1000. Then we would get it, and add the brake controller and 12V feed to a 7 way plug for an additional $150. Now with the tow issue being addressed, I would recommend you make a list of what is a priority of necessary things in the camper (ceiling height, bathroom with toilet, sleeping capacity, trailer width, length, weight, etc.) Then look at what is out there. I looked at Casita, Scamp, Trail Manor, Jayco, Keystone, KZ, Starcraft, etc. I ended up with KZ, mainly because of the weight (3500 lbs max loaded, wet weight is around 2800 lbs with a tounge weight of 350 lbs) is 20'6"L x7'W with a 73" interior height. Queen bed in front, bunk beds in back, and the dinette turns into a bed. Downfall to this would be that you mentioned you need a taller ceiling height, which is an issue with smaller trailers, so that may have to be a compromise on most of them out there. I know the R-Pod has an interior height of about 6'3" in the center, and slopes down on each end. The TADA by TAB has a 5'6" interior height from the ones I saw, and being 6', I ruled them out (even though I liked the design and the looks) Plan on taking a few weeks to a few months to find a TT that will work for you, as you really need to spend time in them before signing on the bottom line for it. Good luck

RE: T@DA anyone?

I think they are still in production. link Yeah, I've been all over their website, but I can't see anything beyond 2008.

RE: Why?

Three years ago this coming June we purchased a 1992 Wilderness. I'm the third owner and it baffels me that the two other owner didn't find this problem, the HARD way. All of the CG's we stay at do not have GFI breakers in their power boxes. The only way this problem would have been noticed is if there was GFI breakers at the CG box or if you were touching the trailer while standing on the ground and with the AC on. Anyway last spring we were putting everything back in when I found I had no power. I have a removeable power cord on the TT and I made an adapter cord that goes from the 30A TT socket to a 110v standard plug. This lets me power up the TT at home (no AC.) Ok, no power so where do I start. I checked all the breakers and they were ok. I was getting power from a 30A GFI circuit from the garage. So it's off to the back of the house and check the breaker box. Sure enough that breaker had tripped. I unpluged the cord going into the trailer and all is good (no bad extenion cords.) I connected the power cord to the TT and no power, Ok I have a problem in the TT. So now it's time to start tripping all the breakes in the TT off and start turning them on one at a time. I found the problem to be in the circuit for the AC, I thought,******this could be big $$$. I took the inside cover off the AC and it looked ok. My AC unit has two knobs, one for power and one for temp control. The one for the temp control was turned to a point that the AC compressor would have been engerized. I checked everything and wiggled every wire (you know the wiggle the wire trick.) Time to power up the TT with all the breakers on, except the one for the AC. Back to the house breaker box and restore the breaker. Returned to the TT and I had power. Now it time to turn on the breaker for the AC, click - no power. I know wiring and I'm really baffled because I had checked the power switch and it's ok. While I had the cover off I noticed there are wires going up to the compressor on the roof. Off to the garage to get a ladder and whatever tools I need to remove the outside cover. With the outside cover off I don't see any problem, but there is a schematic glued inside the cover. Now we're getting somewhere. I'm looking at the drawing and it shows that the incoming power splits before the power switch and it not only goes to the power switch but it also goes to the thermostat, I thought "NOT SMART" the thermostat should be after the power switch, but I didn't design this thing. Now I need my volt/ohm meter and check that the thermostat is turned to the hottest setting (off), so it's down the ladder, into TT for meter, check the thermostat setting and set it to off, now back up the ladder. Now that we're back on top I see there is a connector between the inside controls and the compressor. I looking at this connector, something don't look right - TADA . Some highly trained installer at Coleman didn't assemble the wires into the connector correctly. They had the common and ground reversed on the compressor side of the connector. What this was doing was putting the common side to ground anytime the thermostat was in the on condition, Yes it will still work wired this way, but not safe. This puts a electrical potenital difference on the TT in reference to ground, in short if the AC was on and you touched the TT while standing on the ground you would get shocked (mildly.) With the wiring now corrected it's time to test it. Down the ladder, turn on all the breakers (thermostat set to off}, around the house and reset the GFI breaker, Click - Stays on - kool. Back to the TT and the power is on, Now it's time to turn the thermostat to on - WOW we still have power. Now back to the roof, tape up the wires, install the cover, gather up all the tools and back down the ladder (to much ladder time in one day, keep in mind I'm not the youngest chicken in the coop.) The reason I had never had this problem was I never plugged into a CG power box that had GFI breakers and everytime I had power to it from the garage the thermostat must have been off. This TT was built the end of 1991. I can't believe that in all these years no one ever got shocked. Don't assume that you don't have any electrical problems just becuase your not tripping breakers. Buy an outlet checker and test all the outlets. This may go beyond the typical repairs of the average RV owner, but if your having a problem when plugged into GFI CG boxes it needs looking into. Happy camping

RE: Interior Height for Small Trailers

I have a T@da and love it. The short height enables me to get 20 mpg towing with a 4 cyl Jeep Liberty and 16 mpg with a v-6. I'm 5'9" and have yet to bump my head, I just slump over a little. Also the archwing awning is awesome. Look at the photo's @ tada@yahoo groups.

Interior Height for Small Trailers

Hello, I am researching small travel trailers and really like the looks and build of the Thor T@da "tada", but also like the scamps and casitas. One of my concerns after looking at the dimensions of the T@da is the interior height. It's listed at 5' 9", I am just under 6 foot tall. the scamp has much better head room, I cant find dimensions for the casitas, but they look just a bit shorter inside then the scamps. (just found the dimensions 5' 10") I would like opinions regarding interior height? I could see looking beyond this height issue because I plan to sleep and chill in it, not dance and party (ill do that outside) Thoughts? Experiences? Thanks!

RE: end of our season

With the kids back in school it is almost impossible. We have one last event. A "Fall Family Campout", middle of October. It is in a state park and if you do not get your booking in 6 months out you are done. It is the big "Tada" people burn off the last of their wood, decorate their rigs for Halloween and of course, the kids go trick-or-treat throughout the ENTIRE campground. A dentist's delight....LOL.....After that, bring the rig home and winterize it. Either going to store it at the county fairgrounds or if we get our house sold, and buy the one we are looking at, it will stay at home. The new house we are looking at has an "RV Garage".

RE: Almost a month sleeping in our 16' Scamp each night

Thanks for sharing the details of your trip with us. Camping with a small trailer is the way to go. We just returned from a 30 day 6000 mile trip to Canada and the Pacific NW, towing our 18 ft TADA. It was easy to tow and we got great gas mileage and it was nice to have our own space when we stopped to visit relatives along the way. Small trailers might not be for everyone, but ours is a good fit for us.
