We were camping this weekend and several sites had electric lamp posts constructed out of PVC pipe in front of their RV's - really cute. Does anyone know how to construct the posts and where do you get the lanterns?

We saw one last month made from 1x4's ... square. Very cool. Also very simple.

The guy said he just nailed the 1/4's to make a square tube, and attatched a top piece, slightly larger than the 'post', and a bottom piece. With a spike protruding to push into the ground.

The lamp part can be just about anything from Lowes ... either 12v or 120v if you really get fancy.

My wife wants one big time ... so I guess I will see how easy it is ...

His had a little arm with a name plate dangling from it. Gave his site a very homey look.

It sounds really neat, Wish you had taken pictures. Maybe one of those solar powered lights would work. I may try building one. Thanks for the idea.

Since we live in Missouri, you can't push anything into the ground, too many rocks. So I made bases out of 2x10 lumber, and mounted solar patio lights in them. Drilled holes with a hole saw that was just the size of the post the patio light was mounted on.
We carry them on the dash of the mh while travelling down the road, so they get the full solar charge until we set them out.
One of these lights could be mounted on a PVC pipe as well with the same effect. I may try it, the post and name plate sounds kind of neat.
We bought our patio lights at Home Depot. They came in a set of 8, so I divided them with the other rv'ers in my office. We all have patio lights now.

I made a camp light out of 70 watt high pressure sodium street lamp from Lowes. Built a bracket that fits in a 10' length of 1" conduit. Drive a 3/4" stake in the ground and viola, enough light to light up the whole area, and uses only 70 watts.

Sounds pretty cool. Anyone have a picture of one or more types?

I hope the following link will open - found some interesting solar garden lights that might just do the trick for RVing.

I have made two different versions of the lamp posts, one with an American flag with a 40w light and name plate, and the other only the postlight with name plate. If interested "e" mail me and I will send pictures. gwill598@earthlink.net

"and viola, enough light to light up the whole area, and uses only 70 watts."

This concerns me. When we go to camp, lights are one of the things we want to get away from. In the evening if we feel the need for additional lite, other than the campfire, we use a kerosene lantern as opposed to a Coleman lantern. I feel this may be a trend that will have disagreeable consequences if it becomes that every other site decides to "light up the whole area".
