Okay, how much are you towing with your F350 Diesel? I am looking at 5th Wheels and would like to tow with a Ford but the chart from Ford shows only around 12,000 pounds, is that right? Will it hold true for 2004?

Dick,
You might run that up the flagpole on the 5th wheel forum.

For the 2003 F-350 SuperCab Single Rear Wheel Pickup 6.0L Diesel the max GCWR is 20000 with the 5th wheel max at 13300 for the 4x2 and 13000 for the 4x4.
The weight chart in the online truck manual doesn't apply to the 6.0. you have to go to the 6.0 supplemental at https://web.msslib.dealerconnection.com/........myfile.pdf?DMW_OBJECTID=09000c588036823f
If the link doesn't work I had to get to it after logging into the "My Ford" area.

Clydester,
Our 5th wheel when loaded combined with the truck weighs in just under 24,000lb. This is about 4000 over the combined weight rating. We try and tow with empy tanks whenever possible and leave lots of extra room. Though our truck is less than a year I expect that down the road the excessive weight will probably result in additional wear and tear.
From a day to day driving perspective I've found that the engine and transmission (the auto) are more than adequate. The only problem I've ever had was reversing up a steep grade. I was suprised to find one day that I nearly didn't get the rig rolling. Again, pretty steep grade. Going up would have been no problem but the reverse gear is somewhere between the gearing of 1st and 2nd (something I'll never understand) so you can get yourself into trouble there. The engine is the same that they put in the 450's and 550's (which are rated for more than my 350) but I'd guess that they are geared a bit lower. I mention this because if you're in the same weight range I am you might consider 4wd. It is comforting to know that I have the 4 low gears to switch to if I ever get into a tight spot like that again.
Good luck,
Brad

My Alpenlite is 11,000lbs, my friends tow heavier units. None of us have any problems with the weights these Diesel F3500's are pulling (slowing these things down are more of a problem). I believe the Duramax 3500 can tow heavier units then the Ford. However, I'm extremly pleased with my Diesel Dually Crew and can't imagine driving anything else. There are alot of diesel truck 5th wheel pullers on RV Net. Keep checking your post as you will get great advice from them.

Our Carriage weighs in at about 12,000 loaded. The truck is chipped with new large exhaust header and 4.11 rearend. Our recent trip North through the mountains was pretty uneventful and the truck did an excellent job pulling, however I am not sure I would want to put a lot of additional weight on it. The F450/550 gear is a 4.88 so it can pull more weight. Chevy and GMC seem to have a higher tow rating but we are very pleased with the 350 and got 11 mpg.

Was concerned with my 2500 Duramax also, as the book says 12000 lbs.I think there they are talking about bumper hitch. Looked on Chevy site for specs and says I can tow 15700 with 5th. Somebody posted URL on 5th wheel forum. Cant remember address.
