The thing to do - like a LOT have said i - -

#1 - weigh YOUR truck - FULLY loaded with ALL you expect to take with you.

#2 - look at trailer weights and ADD A BUNCH - for MY F350 (2000) single rr wheel I have 2184 excess lbs. (for pin) and 12284 excess lbs for total.

#3 - find a unit within those weights

#4 - throw out a lot of stuff

#5 - don't tow uphill

#6 - some of those things - I was just kidding.

(# 1 - 3 count)

rr

We just recently purchased a 03 Ford 6.0 diesel with SRW and a 4.11 rear end, automatic 6 speed. We are pulling a Kountry Star 5th wheel thats 36' and has 3 slides. It weighs in empty at 12,900. We loaded it up pretty good and took a trip though the mountians of North Georgia and North Carolina and had no problem what so ever. One of the campgrounds was on top of a mountian and it went up with no problems. I averaged 12 to 14 mpg on the whole trip !,340 miles which I thought was great. Another great feature was the tow/haul mode. I used it going down the mountian and hardly had to use my brakes. Interstate 40 going East out of Asheville. Great Truck!

I have an 02, F-350, Crewcab, longbed, 4x4, SRW, with the 7.3L
On the F-350 the GCVWR is 20,000 lbs and the GVWR is 9,900
If you weigh the truck which is around 8,000 lbs, subtract from 20,000, gives you 12,000 lbs.
Now based on the same 8,000 lb truck, subtract from 9,900, leaves 1,900 lbs for pin weight on a fiver or hitch weight on a travel trailer.
Now, my fiver is a 2004 32 ft Keystone Everest, 291H. Dry weight is 9,800 and the pin weight is around 1,700. Loaded it is around 11,000 lbs and 2,100 since the water tank is rear of the axles.
Truck is un-modified and tows it great with absolutly no problems.

Beagle - Nice job laying these weight considerations out.

I tow a 28 ft 3-slide Montana, listed as having a dry weight of 9800lb. Sure - empty with no extras. Hooked up to my F350 the CAT scales say I am at a CGVW just 20 lb shy of the 20,000 lb CGVW rating. Amazing how the little weights add up.

The truck handles this weight just great. I now have just under 10,000 miles, half towing, and couldn't be happier. But even with power to spare, I would not want to exceed the CGVW. It just doesn't make sense to me to spend a bunch of money on a new rig that starts off overloaded or badly matched.

Dear kayecat..I hope some of the additional posts help you resolve your issue with towing capacity of the F350 as well as the Chevy, Dodge etc. All are good trucks and as you can see all of us are towing with them with much heavier units than your considering. Hope this forum helps you in your decision on your 5r and you have made a good decision on your tow vehicle. Just a note: We tow will full water tanks,4 6volt batts. 2 group 27 baterries, the generator, the dogs, the blender, breadmaker, toaster, the wine..LOL etc etc. I don't think you could come close to what we carry in weight. Kayecat,
We travel with Gottahaveit, the truth is they do have everything mentioned on board their 5th wheel and 6.0 Dually. There so anxious to get to the campground before us that I draft them when ever possible. I save on gas, and allows Gottahaveit to feel great pulling my 7.3 Diesel Dually and Alpenlite up those long hills...LOL

I wanted a Ford, really. Grew up in a 'Ford family'. The F350 simply isn't rated to tow more than 12K lbs. So the decision is really between Chevy or Dodge (unless you go to a F450 which is another $7K - $10K). I went with the Silverado 3500 Allison and love it. Plus it has lots of unused towing capacity, why bother with anything marginal?
