Any product you try someone will have something negative to say. Some might be right but a lot is hearsay. Grocery store dog food is not as good a quality. As far as a 40 or 50 lb bag have you noticed they keep makeing the bags smaller and smaller. I don't think there are any 40 lbers out there any more. I prefer real chicken to chicken by products. We have been feeding Eukanuba low cal for our girl. She has a tendency to bulk up if we don't watch her. It is working for her but were thinking of switching to Science Diet as we have meet several campers that swear by it.

We feed Eukanuba Premium Performance formula, 430 kcal/cup. The breader I bought my dogs from advised me to stay away from Science Diet so I went with Eukanuba. I tried several brands and formulations and Eukanuba seemed to be what my dogs preferred. A bonus is this is the first brand of dog food my tonkinese cat will eat, now I don't have to buy seperate cat food.

We feed Conway Purina Dog Chow (he's 9 now). He's always had a lot of bowel movements a day, but in the past yr he has more (up around 6 a day). I've talked to my vet, and he said we're probably feeding him too much (he was overweight). I've cut down on his food, he lost weight, but he's still going a lot. Any suggestions? Agnes

I was told by bloodhound breeders and an owner of a feed store that the most important thing to do for dog food is to buy a premium food and mix it with other brands. I was told that there is no perfect food and feeding a dog the same brand and same kind all of the time can cause allergies and health issues. We foster beagles for BONES beagle rescue and we are required to feed them Nutro so what I have been doing is mixing that with other dry food and adding canned food and it seems to work. Everyone has a beautiful coat and the bloodhounds do not have ear problems or hound odor. Also, while traveling if you run short of food and can not find your brand you will not be stuck and your dog will not end up ill from a change in food. I think it sounds sensible anyways!

Try feeding Conway a lamb based food instead of a chicken or beef based food. Lamb based food produces a lot less waste then chicken/beef.

I used to feed Iams and thought my dogs were doing well on it. Then I got an email showing me pics where Iams still does laboratory experiments on dogs which made me sick in my stomach and my heart. I then decided to research a quality dog food company. Decided on Solid Gold. They even deliver to your door! Now I truly know what an awesome coat of hair really looks like! I'll never switch as long as these people are in biz.

I know I got off subject but that's the way it is sometimes.

BTW, I heard that Eukanuba is owned by Iams now.

I was told by my dogs vet that they should be provided with a dog food that has a minimum of 21% protein. He said dog chow was good and rather inexpensive. He said you wouldn't want to feed them any of the economy brands such as generics or economets because of the protein content (max is 16%)
No mention was made about where the protein came from, animal or soy-so I basically feed Dog Chow or Dads Chunx. Both dogs are healthy, I don't see the need to feed them overly expensive food.

just my .02 cents.

First off, what your vet says about diet should be taken with a grain of salt. The education they get on diet comes from dog food manufacturers. So they are biased right of school.

We feed our dogs a 100% raw diet(BARF). Which mainly consists of raw human grade chicken (backs and necks). They also get other things from time to time, ground beef, organ meat, fish, eggs (shells too), pureed veggies and so forth.

Kibble has a lot of undigestible stuff in it. Which is why a kibble fed dogs poop a few times a day.

Kibble fed dogs also tend to have horrible breath which is related to all the plaque on their teeth. Which in it's self is bad for their health.

Raw fed dogs poop maybe once a day and have very white teeth with no bad breath. A raw fed dog doesn't need to eat as much, in weight, because it will absorb more nutrients from the raw food.

If this is a hard concept to absorb, just think back about 40-50 years ago, before dog food was made. Dogs seemed to get by just fine. Now we have doggy dentest and host of other vet specialist to take care of all these new problems dogs are having.

The raw diet is very much like the Atkins diet, for humans. High protein, no carbs or grains. Amazingly similar.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents and change.

My dogs also supplement themselves with a raw diet too-everytime they catch a rabbit, woodchuck, or whatever else may cross there path-no need for me to hunt for them...
