I bought my 1999 class A used from a retired couple. It only had 1,700 miles on it, but they had to sell due to health. He told me then the Ford Triton V10 engine was rebuilt before he bought it from the dealer. At 6,500 miles, while my wife is with her friends in Gatlinburg, it looks like I have to do it again. Something in the lower end of the engine is rattling loud, and of course talking to the Ford dealer down there, there is no help of any kind. The repair service, which does not sell RVs by the way, says that the V10s are fodder. Anyone with a helpful solution, or idea?

Something is missing in your story. The thing had 1700 miles on it when you bought it and it had been rebuilt once already?
Was it rebuilt by a Ford dealer under warranty?
Was it from abuse or ??
Very strange circumstances, it seems. There's gotta be more to the story...

Let's see if I understand what you are saying. The fellow you bought your coach from, bought it from a dealer who told him it had a rebuilt engine. You bought it from the first owner with the odometer registering 1,700 miles. You have driven it an additional 4,800 miles and the odometer now reads 6,500 miles. You say you're now hearing a loud rattle in lower end which may be an indication of a serious engine problem. First of all, if the engine was under the Ford 3year 36k mile warranty when the first problem occurred, Ford would have most likely replaced the engine rather than having a rebuild done. As Couch Potato observed, there seems to be more to the story. The v10 is a good engine, however the service tech at our local Ford warranty station did tell me about an incident where on an earlier model v10 a rod broke and punched a hole in the block. The cause was the thin cable used for an oil dipstick came loose from the handle and dropped into the crankcase. The cable wrapped around a rod at the crank journal causing the rod to break. If your engine was rebuilt once, I sure wouldn't have it done again, hate to say, but you may have to spend some serious money and have it replaced with a new engine. Maybe you can get the newer 310hp version.
Best of luck, and keep us informed on the fix.

Are you using the recommended oil weight? or 10W-40, "like I've always done". Too thick of oil has been the only mode of failure I've ever heard of in the V-10's.
There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

I think it's a typo...don't you think he means 17,000 miles?

Regarding oil weight: Ford now recommends 5W30 in the V10's.

MoRambler, I'm pretty sure Ford is now recommending 5w20 synthetic blend oil for the V10.

It best to consult another Ford dealer, and find out what Ford will do for you on this. They have the records for your rig on computer, and will know what was done to it last time. Under unusual circumstances such as this it is possible that Ford might pay half the cost or even the full cost of repair.
My son had a problem with the "plastic" intake manifold cracking on his '96 Mustang. Ford paid the full cost of replacing it three times!; the last time being at around 100,000 miles. They also paid half the cost of a new tranny at over 60,000 miles.
It's worth investigating.

If you don't mind posting the VIN here, I can look it up. Or my e-mail is in my profile.
