jonbeam,
I was at Pirateland this past June for a week and a half.. I had a beach front site. On the online map we were on the very end, 2 rows to the right of the central road that passes over the pond. There are tall dunes with a fence that seperate you and a road from the actual beach. There are breaks in the dune every 100 feet or so. You can't see over the dunes even out the front BR windows of my 5'ver. I personally was a bit disappointed with the overall campground... It looked like it was really nice a few years ago.. but... I know the ocean can really "age" things quickly but I have been camping in Myrtle Beach about 10 years ago and again 15 years ago. Seemed much nice then than now...
I would check out Ocean Lakes. They are about a mile south of Pirateland.. I didn't actually drive back into the campground but the entrance and what you could see from the road looked a bit better kept.
I'd seek out the impression from someone that actually stayed there.
Hope this helps..
We had a ball in and around Myrtle Beach. Tons more family things to do than 10 years ago.

We stayed @ Pirateland in September. It was "o.k.". We do not have children, so the gamerooms and such did not matter to us. I was comfortable @ P.L. We were on the canal, just before crossing the bridge. Was quite, but we were in the way of the fishermen and ducks. We did drive thru OceanLakes and Lakewood. Next trip we will try one of them out. They looked really nice. Of course, you won't get 4 nights for 80. at these other campgrounds. I didn't find they were having any holidasy specials.

We were there for a week in August. Had a spot that was called ocean front, which means you are just on the other side of the dune from the water. Nice, clean place and the kids loved the pool/lazy river they have. Beach was nice too. I'd go back but I'd also check out Ocean Lakes. They may be nicer from what I've heard.
The only downside to PL was that they don't keep kids under 16 from driving the golf carts like maniacs. There were some close calls at night. Really a partents job not the CG.

We stayed at Pirateland our first and last time this year, (we decided to go during Easter at the last minute & Ocean Lakes was full)
The sites are small and most of them you are backed up on someone else. We have stayed at Ocean Lakes numerous times and always enjoy our stay. Ocean Lakes has much more to offer for the whole family even telephone hookups at your site. Hope you enjoy your stay.

I would take a look at the Travel Park. They have nice facilities including a lazy river. It is never as crowded as Ocean Lakes is at this time of year. It has proven to be our favorite. Also it is close to many of the attractions.
