OOPs accidentally put this in c class topic.

I'm looking at buying the following truck and trading my c class on a fiver:
2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 3500 LT Crew Cab
8.1 liter 8 Cyl. Fuel Injected Automatic


Here's the truck I'm looking at. I will be getting around a 31 foot trailer, perhaps the Wildcat 29rlks. Anyone know the GVWR on this truck? Dealer says its about the same as the new ones 11400.
Any reason I shouldn't buy it? I know its only 4x2. It only has 10000 miles.

What else should I need on it or look for? I'm going to check it out on the weekend.

Looks like a great fiver hauler for you...
My 2500HD does a fine job and its right at its weight limits.

Does anyone have a v 10 in a dodge are you happy with it pulling a large 5th wheel? Terry

That truck should pull anything right around 30 feet with relative ease. You'll love the power, and the Allison tranny! Good Luck!!!

Excerpt from a similar topic in Tow Vehicles Forum

The BIG difference in the 2 trucks is GVWR:
2500HD = 9,200 GVWR
3500 = 11,400 GVWR

My dually weighs 7,320 lbs. ready to travel. This leaves me 4,080 lbs. of available capacity. My prior truck was a 2500HD, weighing in at 6,951 lbs. That left me with only 2,249 lbs of available cargo capacity. My coach's ready to travel pin weight is 2,600 lbs...too much for the 2500HD.


My 2500 had the 8.1 and was a horse...plenty of power. Only thing I didn't like was watching the fuel gauge move rapidly towards empty. Having to refuel every 150 miles while towing was a potential PITA...It only had a 24 gallon tank! The dually you're looking at has a 35 gallon tank (approx) so you should be able to get 275 - 280 miles of range when towing.

Your truck will probably be a bit lighter than mine...gasser vs. diesel...crew cab vs. extended cab...2x4 vs. 4x4. Your remaining cargo capacity will therefore be higher.

Good luck with your checkout, sounds like you might have found a great truck.

That's an impressive number of miles on a 2 year old truck. 10k is great. I would preferr the diesel for numerous reasons, but that truck is very capable and should suite you quite well. If the price is right go for it. Just make sure you get the right hitch and brake controler. You may want to look and see if it has the trailer package and wiring harness between the bed and cab. That would be nice, but not a show stopper.

Also you can take the VIN number to a chevy dealer and get it checked for what work has been done to date. Try to get as much history as possible on maintenance and type of driving done. This can help you understand if it has been babied or abused, granted those trucks can take some serious abuse. As soon as you get it, change all fluids from rear diff to tranny to engine oil. You won't have any problem pulling that trailer with that truck. I have a truck real similar to that one (see sig.). It's a horse.

Don't like to burst your bubble but you should really consider buying a deisel engine. The fuel economy is much better...it will pull mountain grades like a locomotive and when you are hauling big loads you should have a manual transmission. Auto trannys are like tires and batteries. They are disposable and will not last. Now I know you are saying,"Who wants to be shifting gears all the time." Well after a little while you will love it and the new manuals shift beautifully.
My brother is an engine and transmission rebuilder and he tells me it doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that in a manual tranny, one steel gear meshes with another steel gear running 100% of the time in lubricant. whereas, with the friction surfaces interacting within an automatic transmissionyou can easily figure out which one has the finite life. I have a Cummins TD 24 valves, with an NV4500 heavy duty manual trans. in a 3500 (1ton) and I will admit it's a little daunting at first. The diesel lugs so hard that you just let out the clutch....in 2nd gear when empty then accelerate. If you accelerate first then let out the clutch, it won't be long before you smoke the clutch but unless you can't drive AT ALL it is easy. Of course you always use 1st gear when pulling a load. The manual also give you about 20 more horsepower. Trust me, you'll be glad you have a stick shift once you get one, and when you're hauling up a mountain on an 8 or 9 percent grade for ten miles or so, like I did this summer, you'll have a warm and tingly feeling knowing you don't have a slush-a-matic down there.

I've had 2 Duramax deisels, a 2001, GMC 2500, and now a 2003, GMC 3500, both with the Allison. If you plan on towing any distances over about 200 miles, the 8.1 will be out of gas. I get 14 MPG (Can.) average with my unit, the all up weight (CGVW) is 21,400 lbs.
