We are contemplating a trip down to Cape Hatteras for early summer 2004. We have never been to this area. We are looking for a place to stay that has walk-to beaches and is more on the quiet side. It Cape Hatteras the place to go for things like this? Any campground recommendations? Thanks...

You will love Cape Hatteras. Here are links to reviews of two campgrounds.
Camp Hatteras, a Review
Cape Hatteras KOA, a Review
Another campground in the same area is Ocean Waves Campground.

If you like quiet you might consider heading a little further south and visit Ocracoke Island. It requires a ferry ride to get there. Most of the island is national seashore. Village is at one end of the 10 mile long island. Park Service campground is about a mile up the road from town.
Great fishing in the area. Lot's of history.
I've been on the beach there during a summer weekend and didn't have anyone closer than 1-200 yards.

My wife and I just got back from Cape Hatteras. We normally go there several times a year. The impact of Hurricane Isabel is still very apparent but many of the campgrounds are open for business. By next summer all should be back to normal. We prefer the campgrounds below the Oregon Inlet Bridge as most are oceanfront and it tends to be less "busy" than the Kitty Hawk side of the island. Our favorite campground (and very reasonable) is Ocean Waves. It only has 52 sites so it's much more quiet than the mega-campgrounds nearby. You'll need to make early reservations right after the first of the year as they tend to fill up quickly due to their size and great rates. Both Camp Hatteras and the Hatteras KOA are right next store. They've got alot more ammenities but also cost about twice as much.If you like dry camping there are some nice oceanfront State Parks at Oregon Inlet and near Hatteras Lighthouse. As previously stated, Ocracoke Island is a great destination for RVing and good eating (Back Porch Restaurant to name one). Hatteras is still one of our favorite destinations as it still has miles upon miles of unspoiled dunes and beaches. Even during the peak of the summer tourist season it's still easy to get away from the crowds or, if you choose, take part in the many activities and dining experiences that are available on Hatteras. Of course, our favorite time to travel there is in the fall after all the tourist leave...it just doesn't get any better than this!

Be careful, use the ferry only at high tide. Cost me a sewer connection once and a generator exhaust pipe another time. But, don't miss the free ferry ride. The State park CG at Okracoke is $18.00 a night, no connections, no generators after 20:00. But then, there isn't a single mosquito on Okracoke. They are all married with BIG families. Decent CG in Avon.

You'll LOVE it!!!!!!!
There is no finer place than the NC OBX!!!!
By the way, "use the ferry at only high tide"?
How ridiculous is that??
Pay no attention to tides!!
Pay attention to getting off the ferry instead!!

We were at the Outer Banks for a few days last week. We stayed at Ocean Waves for the first time (first time we've been able to get a reservation there). It's a very nice campground and the most reasonably priced one on the Outer Banks that we've tried so far. It's pretty hard to get a reservation there though, so start trying early. Camp Hatteras is where we usually stay & we love the campground - just don't like paying over $50/night for a campsite. The KOA is pretty nice too. We enjoyed our stay last week, although the fish were NOT biting at all - very surprising considering October is THE fishing month.
