We are first time Florida State Park campers and seeking information. Prime concerns are: saftey, accessabliity to a 34 foot Class"A" and hookup facilities. Should we forget about camping in a State Park with a Class "A"? Also we are not towing.

Could someone share their camping experiences at the State Parks north of the Jacksonville area?

Thanks for your help in advance.

You could get in Fort Clinch for sure, and I believe Little Talbot Island has some sites that could accomodate you also, but check first on that one. Both are nice.

Go to Hanna. It's a Jacksonville city park that has all securities. You have a code for the gate and bathrooms. They have full hookups and some pull throughs. Your RV wouldn't be a problem. I would rate the park 9 and if it had a pool, I would rate it a 10. It does have a nice beach area and very pet friendly. The only problem I can see is it is not north of Jacksonville.

Hanna Park IS a great park. We were there for a week last Easter. It has a lot of natural foliage, trees, etc. so some sites have quite a bit of privacy. They have a number of pull-through sites, easy to maneuver paved roads for the most part - narrow in a couple of places on the main road through the cg. As said above, almost a 10!! It is on the far east side of JAX, tho, and not the easiest to get to.

I vote for Hanna Park...One of my favorite (and my wife, as well as my grandchildren) campground in the northern part of the state is Hanna Park Campground in Jacksonville, (904)249-4700. It's a city campground (about 1/2 mile) from the Atlantic Ocean Beach. It's a large park with large shaded sites with full-hook-ups, has a good size lake for boating/canoeing, fishing, has a water/splash park (I think it is open in April) and many activities for children and adults. You are near the cities of Jacksonville, St Augustine and Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island. So there's plenty to sight see if you wish. It is also one of the most reasonably priced campgrounds in Florida at $20/nite for full hook-ups a family of four and a dog.

Ft. Clinch is great. There is actually 2 campgrounds there. One on the ocean and another section in the woods next to the intercoastal waterway. There is grteat old Civil war stone fort there to visit also. The town just outside the park is a beautiful old world tourist area.

On our annual pilgrimmage to Disney World we stayed at Fort Clinch the day before arriving in Fort Wilderness in Orlando. We had an ocean site and loved it. A beautiful fishing pier, clean bathrooms and campsites. Plenty of biking roads for family outings. We're going back this year.

I'm a 32 year Jacksonville native that enjoys the great outdoor life here in Florida.
I've visited just about every park here in North Florida and the top three (IMHO) are as follows:
1. Anastasia State Park - A great "beach" CG right outside of historic St. Augustine (approx. 40 mi. south of Jacksonville). While the sites aren't actually on the beach, they are within a short walking distance. The sites are semi-private with some trees and brush between them. The part in which I like is, campers are allowed on the beach when the park closes.

2. Kathyrn Abbey Hanna Park is another park that’s near the beach with all kinds of activities. There’s mountain biking….okay, maybe not on a mountain, but they do have good trails. There’s fresh water lakes and HUGE oak trees throughout. The park is situated next to Mayport Naval Air Station and is about 20 min. from downtown Jacksonville.

3. Fort Clinch is one of the oldest parks in Florida. They have two different CG sites and one is on Amelia River (absolutely beautiful!).

Hope this helps you in your decision. Have a great time here in Florida!
