Doug,

You need to get yourself a couple Campground Directories, Woodall for sure, and maybe a KOA. There are lots of nice places in Williamsburg, it's got a lot of history. A neat place to visit.

Here's a place to start at:
http://www.williamsburg.com/camp/camp.html

I also got a Buy 1/Get 1 Free Breakfast Buffet deal voucher at this web site (we are visiting family in area for Thanksgiving)

Try to visit the Nauticus in Norfolk while there.

Here is another site for Williamsburg. It lists a bit more info and has links to the campground info http://www.visitwilliamsburg.com/campgrounds.htm

We've been to the KOA's and found them to be nice, but the sites are a bit on the small side in most cases. You'll get lots of great recommendations from others who have been there (don't recall names offhand) that found campgrounds they like better than the KOA's. Can tell you this; Pottery Factory Campground is nice if the only thing you plan to do is sleep there. Sites for the transients are out in the (pretty much) open. Not much in the way of amenities and activities. Anvil Campground is often cited for its train traffic, so unless you really, really like the sound of freight trains all day and all night you'll want to pass on that CG.

If you use the search function of this web site (look for "Search" and the magnifying glass symbol on the upper right of your screen), you'll find lots of discussions about Williamsburg campgrounds and not have to wait for replies here. You probably won't hear much that hasn't been said often before. For a private RV Park with full hookups you'll see American Heritage mentioned a lot. We chose to stay at the Newport News City Park campground in May of this year. Here are some of my notes.

Location: Easy on/off from I-64. 15 minutes to Colonial Williamsburg. 30 minutes to Jamestown Settlement. About 1 hour to Virginia Beach. Newport News Visitor Center right next door.

Ambience and general condition: Large, beautifully wooded park with a lake. Some areas have highway noise, but others are very quiet. Shower and bathroom facilities were not very clean. Excellent spacing between sites, big patio areas. The biggest downside was that when we went there were LOTS of mosquitoes. Not sure if that's normal or what the season is.

Amenities: Water and electric (50A). Dump station well located. Most sites are long, but many are not level. Some are VERY sloped. Good network reception with regular antenna. Two excellent golf courses in the park. Several miles of nice hiking and biking trails. Nice playgrounds and picnic areas. Archery range. Disc golf. Bike and boat rentals. 30 acre areomodel flying field.

Cost / Staff / Policies: Came out to $18.81 per night. Easy to make reservations. Can reserve specific site. No charge to credit card until arrival. 48 hour cancellation notice for full refund.

Stayed at American Heritage campground this summer. Clean, shade, mostly pull thrus, small pool, clean rest rooms. Skip Anvil campground, they back up to busy train tracks that will shake you out of your bed at night. Pottery campground has been allowed to run down the last couple of years not nearly as nice as it used to be.

We stayed at the Williamsburg KOA and enjoyed it very much. The sites aren't huge but the ones along the creek are actually pretty good! We used this as our basecamp to go out and explore Williamsburg so we really didn't care about the "camping" aspect. However, the campground was spotless, quiet and comfortable. It has a pool too which the kids enjoyed. We were only about 10 minutes from Williamsburg and all those great restaurants and outlet stores!!!!! Have fun!

We just spent the weekend at Colonial Williamsburg KOA. There are two KOA's within a mile of each other, Williamsburg and Colonial KOA's. Williamsburg is closed for the season. Matter of fact they're so close there's a hiking trail which connects the two. Good pull through sites, clean restrooms, plenty of trees and close to just about everything. It was a great place to see the lunar eclipse this weekend. Of course the wife had to hit Williamburg Pottery Factory. Have fun.
