We're travelling to Fort Bragg, CA from the Los Angeles area with our F150 and a light 27' travel trailer. Any route suggestions? We will need to stay over at a Walmart and Los Banos looks like a possibility but it's pretty far. We're thinking of taking the I-5 to the 33. Any recommendations?

I have been to Fort Bragg from the Bakersfield area, and we took I-5 to Williams, north of SACTO, then went west on Hwy 20 around Clearlake to the 101 North then caught the 20 again at Willits which takes you straight west to Fort Bragg. I am unsure about your comment about Hwy 33. It is no where near FB that I am aware of. Good luck!

I can tell you that it's about 30 miles from Willits to Ft. Bragg via highway 20, and it'll take you about an hour because it's a very slow moving twisty road that I wouldn't care to drive again. It'll make you sea sick.

With that size trailer I would take 101 all the way up, at Cloverdale you head west. Not too bad a road, about 1.5 hours to Ft. Bragg. Lived here all my life and do not know where 33 is.?? You could return via 20 all the way to 5 (that route uses 101/20 from Willits to the turn off for Clear Lake)

If I remember right, if you get close, you should also go to Cloverdale just for a look-see. Great little tourist stop.

I've driven sanapier's route from Sacto many times, a few with a 26' trailer on a Dakota pickup. It's the most direct route you'll find. Believe me, any other way into Fort Brag involves driving on HWY 1 and that is far more winding than the winding portion of 20. Just take 20 at your pace and enjoy Fort Brag.
Don't come up 101 in the Salinas to SF area. Going through the area near Monterey has a lot of cross traffic that seems to seek out trailer haulers (it feels like the old frogger video game), and going through downtown SF to get to the Golden Gate with a trailer is almost unthinkable.
While in Fort Brag, eat at Captain Flints (next to the 2 story tourist restaurant) in Noyo Harbor with a great view of the boats coming and going.

So what? I would assume these folks are on vacation. I would surely not recommend going through the bay area on 101 and then up 1? Anyway, it's up to you. Good luck and take care...

There is a Garden on the outskirts that winds down toward the ocean that is also a must see, can't remember the name but I'm sure you can ask any local. Cost is about $5 and well worth it.

Thanks everyone. I can now explain the 33 reference. I was confused. That's where we will need to get off the 5 to get to the Los Banos Walmart.
Sure appreciate all your help. Mom says the 20 has been widened and repaved since we visited last. Since we both tend towards motion sickness, we were a little worried about the 20 but I guess a bit of bonine or dramamine might help.
We came up Hwy 1 once but we were in a car. Hoping for a shorter drive this time. If we're reading the map right, we figure to take the 5 up to Los Banos and (as we understand it) pick up the 101 around there to the 20 to Ft. Bragg. If anyone is aware of road closures...
Love Captain Flint's and the Garden. Mom's a garden nut - she belongs to the Botanical Gardens group up there... believe that is a botanical garden McGoo's referring to, a definite must-see. We were up there in the spring and went on a tour of one of the most abundant Rhododendron gardens. Too beautiful!
Thanks again.

Just type in the highway numbers here:
http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/
20 between 5 and 101 through Clearlake always seems to have something going on but the wait is usually minimal.
