Hi All,
We have a 15'Colman Canoe we want to take with us when we leave these parts. We are thinking about carrying it on the roof of our 22' Class-C. Can you do this? If so, HOW? I do not want to damage the roof seal.Has no leaks, new sealer. Any mounting advice from someone doing this??? Thanks in advance.

Hi all.
We thought of putting the canoe on the toad, A 1979 Jeep CJ7. A 15' canoe on a 10' toad? I'm looking for a better way.

I carry the canoe on the truck not the TT, so after the TT is set up I can drive directly to the water. Same when we get a MH, the canoe will go on the towed vehicle, so no extra handling to get it to the water. If no towed vehicle, then consider installing rails and cross bars (like you would on a truck shell)to fasten the canoe to, so it will not rest on the rubber roof.

My roof is a 1/32 to 1/16 thick sheet of aluminum bonded to 1/8 inch thick plywood(?), 1 3/8 inch high density foam and another 1/8 inch plywood. Nothing to screw into. I had some aircraft structural aluminum honey comb, 1 inch thick panels. Made 4 pcs of 8x8 inch blocks. Inserted 4 1/4-20 bolts into each block and epoxied them in. Attached handles to the blocks. Epoxied the blocks to the roof with a thin layer of epoxy. Took one canoe to Florida for someone and last year I took my 16+ foot kayak. I put two safety ropes just in case, one goes to the awning mount and one around the A/C. Both are left loose. The Kayak is mounted upside down on two supports.

Robin,
We used to do the same when we had a TT. I still have the bumper mount "T" bar for the rear.

I've carried a 14' fiberclass canoe up and down the East Coast on my two previous Class Cs. Weight of canoe is around 45 pounds and I could get it up and take it down myself.
Both these motorhomes had an aluminum tube roof/luggage rack open on the front side. I ran a PVC pipe across the front opening and fastened it to the aluminum rails with sheet metal screws. Had a PVC tee in the center with a cap on the bottom to rest on the roof for stability in the center.
On the rear luggage rack aluminum rail, I drilled for two eye bolts through the rail and fastened with nuts on the bottom. Did the same with the PVC pipe rail. You want these in the right place to squeeze/hold the canoe in the location you want it on the roof/rack.
I then would use motorcycle tie downs that have a locking slide through the two eye bolts in the two locations and pull them as tight as I could get them over the top of the canoe. I also used a cable and lock to lock the canoe to the roof rack.
I could open the vent in the rear bedroom most of the way, and the canoe was behind the AC unit that cut wind down.
I used a piece of foam under the nose of the canoe on the front side because it rested lightly on the roof. My roof was rubber.
Never in thousands of miles of travel did this ever loosen up or move...I would check it occasionally and never had a problem.
To get it up and down, I would spin the canoe over the curb side, slide it over the rail down to the ground holding one end and lean it against the awning rail, climb down the ladder and done!
Same procedure on getting it up on the roof, just picked it up till it rested on the roof rail and slid it up.
Had a few people over the years stop me on the road to ask how I mounted this canoe and got it up and down...
Hope this helps.

bangbacj7,
Your particular problem is a 15' canoe on a 22' motorhome.
I used to have about two feet hang over the rear of the 28' and 30' motorhome, but in your case, more would be required.
I'm guessing you have a roof air conditioner and you have no way of putting the canoe over this.
I'm going to have to install a luggage/roof rack on my new MH if I want to take the canoe, I do miss having it.
I used to just leave it on the motorhome whether I was going to use it or not!

See the following two links to see how we have carried two 17 foot sea kayaks on our two motorhomes. This system has worked for ten years without problems. The weight of the rack and boats is supported by the sidewall, not the roof, as recommended by the RV’s manufacturer.

I have carried a 15' Colman canoe and, more recently, two perception carolina (13.5') kayaks on the roof of my MH. My procedure is similar to GerryB54. If you search for "kayak" with user "clemkad", you'll find an earlier post I wrote about the kayaks. Relevant parts repeated here.
My toad is small and I was really concerned about the constantly buffeted wind behind the MH vibrating the canoe/kayaks and damaging either the boats or the car. I opted for the roof of the MH.
For the canoe, I added a luggage rack across the roof about 10' from the back. This and the existing luggage rack supported the canoe and I just tied it off to the rails. The added rack was screwed into the roof framing members via the use of a stud finder. This rack hasn't budged.
For the kayaks, I built a rack that ties *down* to the two luggage rack bars. The only problem I've had with that setup is I pulled the original back luggage rack out of the roof in one place (where the rear of the rack was tied *down*). The wonderful people at Coachmen tied the luggage rack down with sheet metal screws through only the rubber roof and about 1/4" luan. There was nothing else there to screw into so I went all the way through to the inside (in a closet where the nuts can't be seen) with a bolt, fat washer, and nut.
By far, the hardest part is getting the canoe/kayaks up and down. I use a rope with occassional knots for holding. One person on the roof, one on the ground. Off the curb side, one end can be lifted by the rope while the person on the ground lifts the other. When high enough, I grab the boat on the roof. Opposite to get down. I have a piece of PVC tubing cut to slip over the side luggage rack to prohibit damage to MH/boats.
I know that my heights are 11'1" with nothing, 11'6" with the canoe, and 11'9" with the kayaks.
When I can't lift the boats anymore, I'll leave them on the toad. Or, use the approach that LazyRVer just posted. That's a cool system.
