Over the last few months, my Sierra half ton developed what I can only describe as play in the drive train. When starting from a stop, there was a sense that some play in the system had to be taken up before a good solid power transfer started to occur. Once started, it was fine.
Having read all the horror stories about 1/2 ton GM drive train failures for trucks pulling trailers, I headed in to the dealer to have it checked out. My dealer found a rear propshaft slip yoke was defective, and replaced it no charge under a GM Service Bulletin. This fixed the problem and once again it feels like a brand new truck.
Just thought I'd pass this on in case anybody has a similar problem.

I have a 2001 Silverado that seems to have some play in the drive train also, do you know if there was a recall on this problem? Or can you come up with the number on that service bulletin?

Have them repack the drive line coupler with silicone grease. It helps but wont really fix it for good.

I had a 2001 Silverado 1500 Z71 Had the same problem I would hear a klunk noise when I slowed on turns and then accelerated and also leaving a stop talked to two dealers in my area and as usual got the ever so popular pre programed response " Never herd of this before but it is within GM specs" LOL I traded it in on a 2500HD no more problems Good Luck

My 2000 Z-71 had developed the same problem when about 3.5 months after I bought it, 2 years ago. The dealer said there was a TSB issued for it and they fixed it for FREE! This was after my Certified Warranty ran out.
I did check and the TSB is there, sorry I no longer have the TSB number. Anyhow, do not let them give you any lip about it...make em' fix it. All they (supposedly) need to do is go to their 'Regional' person for an approval (what I was told anyway). Of course, I am a pain in the a**, so they could have just wanted me the heck off the service floor too.

My truck developed the same symtoms at about 43,000 miles. Dealer said it was the slip yoke. They could do temporary fix (probably what they do on vehicles under warranty) but may only last 10,000 miles or so. Permanent fix per dealer is to replace with nickel plated (more slippery) slip yoke. That is the route I went $363. Other than that I haven't had any other problems with drivetrain. I don't know if this is a problem on the 3/4 ton and one ton trucks of GM.
It does tick me off however that I had to pay this out of my own pocket as it seems to be a problem on a large percentage of GM trucks. I will take this into consideration the next time I shop for a truck again. Hmmm, Dodge is offering a 7/70000 mile warranty. Wake up GM.

I have a 2002 GMC Sierra 2500 HD 6.0L ¾ ton with TT package. I have travelled approximately 25000KM while pulling and have had no adverse transmission problems Perhaps the 25000HD combined with the TT package eliminates the "slop" you have experienced. As a matter of fact the truck pulls my 31 foot Golden Falcon with absolute ease and stability.

The paperwork I received just said Replaced per Bulletin. I spent a fair amount of time on the web last night trying to get more information on this before I posted, but it looks like they only make their Service Bulletins available to registered service mechanics, which definitely leaves me out.

Here is the scoop:
The first fix was to remove the yoke and lubricate the splines with a special molybdemum disulfide grease. This stops the binding and clunking for a while, but the noise tends to come back eventually.
GM now has a permanent fix available. For 1500 series trucks from '99 to '02, it's a nickel-plated driveshaft slip yoke, part number 12277702. If it's a 2500 series truck, the part number is 1247704. The nickel plating provides a slippery surface, and should prevent the binding that causes the clunk.
This upgrade is described in TSB No. 01-04-17-004 dated October 2001.
