I have a 1999 GMC half ton 4x4..Ive owned it since it was 10 months old. There has always been a severe clunk going into reverse as well as some shifts.. Into reverse there seems to be a double clunk. When it was still under warranty the dealer replaced the slip yoke with the new style. No change . Was told that this was a normal condition..The truck only has 60000 kilometers on it.. I wrote GM a letter complaining about this problem..There reply was that they were aware of the condition but donot consider it a warranty item and that this would not harm the vehicle at all. I also suggested to them that if this was the case that perhaps they could extend the warranty on the truck.Of course they said no.This problem is very annoying and im sure its not doing the driveline any good. Other than this problem the truck is the best vehicle i ever owned. But this clunking really P--S me off!!

Bullyus,
Your problem sounds a bit different from the slip yoke problem. With my truck I was getting a chirp or squak type sound (for lack of a better description) when stopping and starting from stop signs etc. while in drive. Your problem of the clunk when engaging reverse is also a widespread problem. My truck has had that since new but it is not extreme. I had the dealer check two other new trucks on his lot and they both did the same thing. Just another GM quirk I guess. At least in your case by them replacing the slip yoke you will not have to worry about the problem that I had and having to pay for it yourself. Consider yourself $363 richer.
Overall I have been very happy with my truck. The only other problems I have had were with the throttle body which GM replaced under warranty which was also a common Chevy problem and I think I might have the same problem as others with the intermediate shaft in the steering where there is a clunking sound. Mine isn't very noticeable and from what other Chevy owners have stated GM has no permanent fix for this either. GM does need to get their act together and if they want to keep long time customers like me they need to step up to the plate and correct (at their cost) these widespread problems on some of their vehicles. Just my opinion.

Had this problem in my '89 Silverado. Same problem, same cure. The moly grease is a good fix, but after awhile I got tired of pulling the drive shaft. I eventually started to ignore the clunk, and after the truck got over 100K on it, the factory slip yoke loosened up enough that the problem went away.

I also have a 2001 Z71 with similar prblems. My dealer ordered a chromium yoke and an isolator kit for the rear leaf springs. Now everything is fine.
