Don't know what you call close or your actual destination. Consider Pilot Mtn State Park or High Rock CG in Lexington. Lake Myers and ? in Mocksville. Feel free to PM me as I live just outside of W-S in Lexington and know this area very well. Good Luck.

gmsfool, we have family in W-S so travel there in MH alot. If you need to be in town, then the only choice you have is the fairgrounds. It is ok. All are "piggy back" but this campground is usually empty so you can use the sites as pull thrus. All are grassy. It is at the coliseum. You can just find a spot and then go pay. If you don't have to be right in W-S, you might want to try Oak Hollow in High Point. This is a city campground and is very nice. Most sites are spacious with trees/woods surrounding them. It definitely isn't as convenient. We usually opt for the fairgrounds. Hope ths helps.

Staying at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds campground is going to be your closest location to Clemmons. Don't expect any amenities, but it is convenient. Your rig is too big for Pilot Mountain State Park. We have a 35' Dutch Star and find High Rock Lake very tight and hard to maneuver around. Lake Myers or Midway Campground out towards Statesville wouldn't be too bad a drive if you would like a more traditional campground. Maybe a 20 to 30 minute drive to Clemmons. We did not like Lake Myers at all and I think if you do a search for that campground you will find many that feel the same way. Small sites and the vast majority of sites are seasonal. We have stayed at Midway and it is decent. It is right off of I-40, so it would be an easy drive to Clemmons.

gmsfool, guitarman mentioned Midway. We also had checked them out for stays in W-S. In September, 2003, they quoted us $40 a night! Now, maybe if I wasn't from the area, I'd be ok with this. But you can get a site on the NC or SC beach for that! So, we wrote them off of our list. Also, to me, it really isn't any closer to Clemmons than the fairgrounds. But then, I'm from the area, so the driving would be no big deal. Fairgrounds is $17. I would not do Oak Hollow in High Point since you will be visiting Clemmons. Hope this helps.

I recommend you do not stay at the fairgrounds! This is not the best area in Winston-Salem. I'm a firefighter in WS and respond in that area. I would not feel comfortable staying there. These sites are there are for folks with the fair or when something else big is going on at the Coliseum or fairgrounds. This time of year you'll probably be by yourself. A really nice campground is in Booneville, NC. Its about 30-45 minutes from Clemmons, but it is very nice! The website is: http://hollyridgecampground.tripod.com/
Check it out.

gmsfool, I must reply to KDG's response. My husband was with the police department for the city of W-S for 22 years and never responded to problems in the campground part of the fairgrounds. We moved away 2 years ago and return home often. We stay here and I would never recommend it to anyone if I felt it was unsafe. I wanted to respond because I feel KDG's remark is unjustified. I decided to add this - if you have any doubts or concerns, please call the W-S Police Department and ask them about the calls/reports of trouble at the fairgrounds campground. I am sure they will give you a straight answer.

If you have family in Clemmons, then I think your best bet is Lake Myers. It may not be the absolute top RV resort in the country, but it is not that bad, and for visiting relatives near by, I would think this would work out great for you. Lake Myers is just off I-40, a few miles West of Clemmons, so for convience, it would be hard to beat. Hope you enjoy your trip to NC! Go Heels!
Well, forget about the trip to NC bit, I just caught your NC address.
