Besides 800 numbers in the U.S. there are others such as 866 and more. While visiting Canada this year, can I call back to the U.S. from Canada on an 800 or 866 (or other) toll free number from a Canadian pay phone?

You can call any 800 type number (1800,1888,1877,1866,1855) from any payphone without putting in any money. The numebr has to be activated for canada. Some 1800 numbers are US only or Canada only. It costs a company a bit more for a North America Wide one.

So, if a U.S. company has not activated their 800 nbr for incoming calls from Canada the only option is to obtain that company's "regular" line i.e. the 10 digit nbr with area code. Right?
Also, since you are familiar with the phone system in Canada, I have aquestion about pre-paid phone cards. What is the typical rate per minute for these cards? Are they sold at supermarkets and drug stores in B.C?

I'm not sure what the rates would be, but they would be quite comparable to the US. You can buy them anywhere. Telus, Bell, Sprint & AT&T are probably your best bets.

There are usually lots of no name brands of cards at bus and train stations that are much cheaper. They work fine although the quality may be less than the traditional phone companies.

Depending on which company it is, they may have a Canadian division with it's own 800 number as well. You could always try that if you need to.

The company my sone works for is a US based company with Canadian offices..I cannot call him on his 800 line form the states..If I want to call him, I have to call his parent company in NY on their 800 line and ask for his extension...takes awhile but its free..

What I find aggrevating is when I want to make a reservation in the US and all they put on their web site is their 800 number and we cannot access it from Canada. When we owned a Travel Agency we had a Continent wide 800 number and it didnt cost that much extra but our clients appreciated it. When these sites advertise in Woodalls which are continent wide books it would I would have thought made sense to make the booking easy for everyone. (The sites I am referring too are the ones without web addresses).
