I want an Explorer to pull my 5000# trailer, but the trailerlife towing guide says they need a "heavy duty towing package". Is it a tranny cooler, suspension difference, more?? Something that has to be factory, or something I can add? Even dealer mechanics give me different answers. Anyone know, or know a definitive source to find out?

Not sure what the Ford package has but as an example, my GMC tow package included (from Factory) larger Air filter, heavy duty trany cooler, bigger tires different suspension and a 4:10 rear end. It also came with pwr extend miirors and prewired, not that those increase capacity, but the tow package had the bigger engine as well. All in All it raised to towing capacity to 8200lbs...pretty good for a 1/2 ton.

Hope that helps

Is 5000# all you are planning on pulling? Looking to upgrade your TT in a couple of years? What are the other specs for the Explorer you are considering? Depending on the setup, the Explorer can make a poor TV for anything more than a PU. You may want to look for a larger TV. More pulling power now and room to expand in TT size later.

The V6 explorer package includes an oil cooler. I'm not sure about the V8.

Robb you left out a lot of required data.

V6 or V8
New 2002 + model or older model.

For the 2002+ you can look at the website for Ford and get all the details, basically it is a trans cooler, class 3/4 hitch with wiring and the 3.73 rear.

For 2002+ Models with V8 and Trailer Tow Package limit is 7000lbs, which means to be conservative you should not go much beyound 5200lb dry trailer.

Sorry about the missing info: I'm not working, so looking at 2000 models (~$15,000, gonna sell her minivan) with the 5L engine. The TT is 4300# dry and I have absolutely no plans to upgrade. We will be taking 2-4 week long trips now (just got back from a month in FL - '87 van started on fire on the way back) and it's fine for that. Once I'm working again it'll be only for weekend trips. By the time I'd even consider upgrading, I'd be ready for another vehicle anyway.

I have a 99 AWD V8 XLT 4 door as a family truckster, with the tow package that I've had since new.

All it is in this model is a limited slip rear and a 4 wire dongle for trailer lights. Trailer brake wiring and hitch platform have to be added. The 2000 model year I don't think was any different.

All V8's came with an external tranny cooler, and in 99 all had 3.73 gears. In 2000, 4.10's may have been available, but only with taller 16" wheels, so the tow rating of an 11000lb GCWR (6600 AWD/6800 2WD) stayed the same. Mine with a full tank of gas weighs 4400, with a GVW of 5650.

I think a 4500lb hard side trailer would pull fine behind one, but not much more than that.

The RV consumer site package includes a disc on towing problems in its package. One of the things it strongly recommends for safety in driving is a self-adjusting or articulating hitch. It's expensive but your life is worth it. So is avoiding "white knuckle" driving even if you do avoid an accident.

They have several interesting photos of accidents where trailer-pullers violated fundamental rules. Also note that some trailers rate much better for highway control than others (in the 80's and 90's on a scale of l00), while dozens rank in the 40's, 30's and 20s. One ranks as low as 22 out of l00.

I tow a 25' 5000# TT with my 99 4.0L SOHC Explorer. It pulls the TT good. I average about 60mph on the hwy. Up hill it slows to about 53-55 but I still have pedal left. I just choose not to kill the tranny by stomping the gas to go up a hill. Mine came with a Tranny cooler, oil cooler T-lock, and 3.73 gear. If I were gonna pull on a regular basis I would upgrade eventually. I only camp on weekends and really no more than 600 mile round trip on longer stays.
Its fine for us.
