We had to leave our rig in Indio for repairs and just got it back this weekend. Before we left it we cleaned out the fridge and freezer (we thought) and shut it down. When I picked up the unit, I found the remains of a forgotten steak up on top of the icemaker and the remains of those who had come to the feast all over the freezer. The smell, to say the least was interesting. Before starting for home, I removed everything from the freezer including dismounting the icemaker scrubbed it down with clorox cleaner. When I finally got home I did the same drill again. I think the smell has permeated the plastic.
Has anyone had this problem and found a way to remove the smell? The smell does not seem to be noticeable when it's operating and frozen, but I would like to know that it's gone before I put food in.
Thanks for any solutions.

You may try washing it out with a detergent then put some baking soda on a plate along with a couple pieces of charcoal and let it set for a week or so, might help.

Ouch,
Reminds me of a friend who went on vacation, and turned off the wrong Circuit Breaker. Freezer defrosted and sat for a month.
His solution, after a total scrubdown of the interior, including behind the door gaskets, was to line the freezer with newspaper, and put charcoal brickettes in the freezer.
Seems the newspaper/charcoal collected all the smell.
Can't gurantee it will work, but you might give it a shot.

cactus jack is right, you cn also use a newpaper with out colored ink along with the baking soda. loosely roll up some pieces of newspaper and put it in the freezer ans fridge, also sprinkle some baking soda in and around the areas. change our the paper every few days for a few weeks. the charcoal from the ink in the paper helps absorb the odor and the paper absorbs the moisture.
Hope this helps. it happened to me once, that's all it took for me to learn!!

Go to Sams, CostCo, ect., and buy a large bottle of vanilla extract. Wipe down all surfaces with a rag or sponge soaked in the vanilla. Be sure to use rubber gloves or you will smell like vanilla for weeks. Close the unit and allow to sit overnight. Open next day, wipe off and allow to dry. Repeat this several times if necessary. After a few weeks if smell is still present, the blood may have gotten behind liner, and if so the only recourse is to replace the unit. Good luck.

It was on the RV Today show on TV saturday about opening a can of coffee and put it in the freezer to absorb the smell. Then discard the container. Not sure how long though.

One other thing you may try is a bowl or other open container of white vinegar. Also try wiping down with the white vinegar and then let the bowl sit for several days to absorb the odor.
Good luck with it.

Go to the TT forum and search for a thread called "Help, my trailer stinks" posted by me (TravelinMom) last year. I tried many of the remedies suggested but it took time and repeated cleanings.
Just be thankful it was steak and not chicken.
