Sometimes it is neccasary to rotate the case to get them to go on.

Turk,
Good comments all. If the alternator looks like it has the same connectors but the mounting ears are in the wrong position the alternator has to be clocked. That is the alternator is split and the correct orientation achieved through rotation in 90 degrees steps
between the head and tail end. If the local FLAPS can't help you find a NAPA or other store where the counter people don't wear their caps so tight

Andromeda makes a good suggestion. I've also had to change the "clock" on GM alternators. Its easy to do.

Every alternator I've seen on a Gm product have all came in the same case. The only difference I've seen in any of them has been the pullys which are easily replaced, and the amp ratings which has to do with the number of wraps on the coils... Lower amp ratings were heavier wire with fewer wraps, and higher amp ratings were lighter wire with more wraps. Same case though, and this goes from my '72 Chevelle to my wifes '01 Malibu and many other GM vehicles in between.
Just take the old one off and bring it to a reputable parts shop... If they know what it is right away they will just ask you how many amps the thing is... If they don't recognize it find another store...
FWIW for your age of vehicle I would think that 100-120 amps would be just fine.

If it is a Delco I agree any decent parts place should have it and be able to clock it to fit your engine. But I have a 1990 HR on a P30 with a Lestek and doubt if it would be as easy to find. When it dies it will have a readily available Delco.
