I have a 2002 GMC Sierra With the OEM heavy duty trailering package. Mine has bent to the point that I no longer dare to use it. I've heard all the talk about this being a cheap hitch. What I would like to know is what to expect at the dealership. Has anyone tried to get a hitch replaced (with something better) under warranty?

Are you pulling a real heavy load or is this just a cheap hitch GM has found with the idea of getting people to upgrade for a few dollars more......a 10000 lb hitch should stay solid for 10,000lbs.
Heard of another thing like this with rotors on a Buick LaSabre. Coming down the Rockies they got so hot they warped. GM dealer said, "That was normal. If you want better ones, we can get em for you." .........nice..!!

This hitch is rated for 1500lbs TW w/weight dist. 15,000 total. I am about half way there. GM decided to hide most of the hitch by using a bent tube for the main component.

I have a 2002 Suburban K2500. I replaced the OEM hitch with a Putnam XDR Class V hitch. You can have one delivered from Southwest Wheel (http://www.etrailerpart.com/MyWebs/myweb/catalog/pu25121_1800734.htm) for about $150. Easy installation.

Lot's of good info about your problem.
I imagine the dealership would only offer to put on another OEM hitch. I doubt they will let you pick. That would be admitting they have a faulty product.

I also replaced my OEM hitch with a Putnam class V. Works great and it was easy to install.

Gecates, Here a link to the pictures of my failer receiver.
My trailer is 8500 lbs (weighed at the scale) with a tongue weight of around 1100. Dealer wouldn't even discuss a warranty claim on the receiver, said I must have been overweight. Even though I had the weigh slip, the service mgr. wouldn't come out to talk with me. I filed a complaint with the NHTSA. Gave up fighting with GM over $200 part...time is too valuable.
Good luck!

I would think that you ought to go talk to the service department of your dealership.
That way you will get the actual answer.
If it is not an answer you like, come back and maybe there will be some suggestions.

When you say half way there do you mean 750lbs hitch weight and 7500lbs trailer weight? I towed that much weight with my previous TT and my current race car trailer , no probs. Maybe a defective hitch.
