We have just ordered a Sportsmobile Camper Van and we would like an awning. Should we order the awning direct from Sportsmobile or are there other types of awnings for a camper van. This is new to us and we would appreciate any information on awnings and what is available for a 19ft conversion van. Any incite will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Karen

We have the SMB installed awning and it works very nice. I would hesitate to have some one else install it, as the SMB folks know where everything goes (wireing, etc).

It's expensive, but it's worth it

My friend bought a custom Sportsmobile last year. She ordered the awning with it. On the first trip a bad wind came up and destroyed the awning. It wasn't anchored properly - I'm not sure of the details. ANyway, Sportsmobile replaced it as it was under warranty. If you're not a seasoned camper, I'd opt for the awning from the factory. That way you don't have to worry about repairs not being under warranty.

If I'd have gone with Sportsmobile, I'd have ordered the factory awning (went with Great West Vans instead).

If you have decided to go with an awning, go ahead and let SMB install it. Their unit seems to be good but I can't opine on the relative cost. I had one installed on my EB50 (Ford) that I picked up in Fresno last October. We have spent more than 70 nights in the SMB since then and have not yet used our awning. Maybe we don't slow down long enough to deploy it. Last time I was in Fresno I had the factory show me (again) how to deploy it and it is pretty slick.

If you want one, go ahead and have SMB do it right.
