Re: filters. The percolator has a filter basket, but we always bought flat disc filters that fit the basket. Finally couldn't stand the perked coffee any longer and bought a large cone filter that my husband trimmed to fit our thermos carafe, so now we have drip coffee again.

We originally used a Mr Coffee in our MH, but had to turn on the generator. I ended up having to wait until 9am to start the generator sometimes. That meant a late start for the days activities. I bought a percolator and couldn't master making a good cup of java. So one day, I was in the market and saw individual Melita coffee makers. They also have a larger model. You take the cone shaped plastic filter holder and place it on the cup. Insert a #2 filter and add coffee. I use 2 table spoons of course ground or 2 teaspoons of fine ground. That may sound like a lot, but I have a 12 ounce cup. I use the percolator without the basket to boil the water. Once the water boils, I pour the water onto the coffee grounds and it soaks on thru to the cup. It makes a real good cup of coffee. And no generator use or waiting 7 minutes for it to brew. As I mentioned, they make a larger unit. The individual cup maker cost a few dollars.

Everyone like thier coffee different, but here are some tricks that can make a person who didn't like perced coffee like it better.

Us 1/3 cup of grounds to 12 cups of water
sprinkle some salt, cinnomon, or nutmeg over the grounds. Salt takes 2 shakes from my shaker, cinnomon, and nutmeg 1.
Boil it till it perks dark

if you don't have a looking glass, it will boil over when it is ready.

Serve it in tin cups for authenticity.

Most people like the added salt, but it can get to where the salt makes it taste salty. if it taste salty you have used too much.

Cinnomon and nutmeg both flavor it well, but again too much and you overpower what was a good cup of coffee.

Wow!

Lots of replies in such a short time! Thanks, you all are great.

Actually, I'm much closer to 40 than 30, and I guess my folks had a perculator, but I wasn't interested in coffee until my Army days, well into the Mr. Coffee era.

Thanks for the tips. We'll have to try your tips and see what we get. The Melita-type cone filter holders work well, but we dislike babysitting the thing, keeping it full. We put our filter holder onto our thermos and keep filling the cone until the thermous is full.
We are spoiled with the timer.

Hi! Love all the posts. I will try some of these recipes.
Heres one of our fishing favorites!
CAMP COFFEE = 2 AM COFFEE
Dump grounds into boiling water (no filter best when done in inverted cone pot)
Use lots of coffee grounds.
Let set and cool five minutes.
Pour through strainer or filter into cup slowly.

We've never used anything but a percolator both at home and on the road. Here is what I do for a 10 cup batch.
Use 5-5 1/2 tablespoons per pot.
Put it on to boil and when you get that first bloop in the glass knob turn the stove to low flame and let it perk for 3 minutes. If you don't turn the heat down it'll boil over all over the stove top too.
Turn the heat off and let it finish perking.
Then drink up.
We use the range top percolator on the road and an electric percolator at home. The electrics are starting to be hard to find.
If I am where I can have a campfire I make cowboy coffee in a blue enamel 1 gal. over the fire pot. Now that's good coffee. Jack.

The Coleman stove top drip coffee maker works just like the electric drip machines. The only thing you need to worry about is you have to turn off the stove as soon as it finishes running the water thru or it could over heat and warp the bottom.

No one has mentioned a coffee press but it is a little more formal than what tfe11111 mentioned. You still just pour boiling water over the desired amount of grounds and let steep for 5 – 7 minutes then there is a built in press filter that you use to push all of the grounds to the bottom. One problem with this is it is meant to serve the whole pot in one go or the last cup will taste like mid-rats coffee in the Navy. Not a really good thing but plenty of caffeine.

Another option is stove top espresso pot. The local camping supply store has a model that holds 2 shots and works great in under a minute.

As for the original question, Same amount of coffee and water that you would use in the drip pot, bring to rapid boil then slow to a slow roll for 7 to 10 minutes.

Well seems I'm old enough to remember, but am old enough to forget AND since I'm a tea drinker (except for Starbucks) I just have to worry about remembering to push the knob in before turning LOL (I actually broke one off the stove when we first started camping...)

However, my other 1/2 likes his coffee strong & hot, so he uses the french press! (Tried my old "for company" Mr. Coffee & then the drip pot.) He got the french coffee press for Christmas & loves it. Seems pretty fool proof too

Cheers, Baby Boomer
