I have never been able to pump diesel without getting the smell on my hands either from the cap or the pump. My friend suggested using toothpaste to wash hands with. We happen to have that crest minty smell stuff. So I have been doing it lately and seems like it works pretty dang well. Just put on hands add a little water and let soak for a minute they rinse off. I've had these gloves ever since I've had a diesel truck and I use them. I've not yet had the smell of diesel, or diesel fuel, on my hands yet. If the fuel island is really dirt, we look else where, or use the gloves. Otherwise the wipes do the job.
