For the last year I've kept my MH on the base, along with 2500 other rigs, while I was on a waiting list for a storage lot about 2 miles from my home. I didn't mind the drive to the base but for the last couple of months I could not get a straight answer from the El Toro RV storage people regarding closure, even after I mentioned that the newspaper said they would start tearing up the runways in June. Since I was afraid to take a chance with El Toro and by pure luck, I stopped by the local storage yard a couple of weeks ago to check on my status. Luckily a tenant was checking out and they gave me his spot - so much for waiting lists!! I guess if you want something you have to be persistent.

Anyway, I wonder where all these rigs are going to go when the El Toro storage lot closes? Can you visualize 2500 people scrambling for another storage area?

I posted about the closure a couple of days ago. Nobody seemed concerned.

I did an RV storage survey about two years ago when our local RV owner's association was fighting a city ordinance proposal that would have severely restricted temporary street parking. I found very few spots available anywhere in Orange County, where almost every city has one or more ordinances that restrict RV parking. The impact of evicting those 2,500 RVs from El Toro is potentially huge.

I have written the city of Irvine requesting that they give serious consideration to inclusion of an RV storage facility in their development plan but given the prevailing culture don't have a lot of hope.

Congratulations on getting a permanent spot. I have one just three miles from home in a secure lot.

Hwybnb: Originally, I was storing my MH on at my other home in Lake Havasu, AZ but as you could imagine it was a hassel getting it and then bringing it back. Prior to bringing it back to So Ca, I contacted EVERY storage facility in LA and Orange county re vacant space. I was on a waiting list on every one of them. Finally and out of desperation, I found a spot in Hemet, which is about 1 hour away. It was relatively cheap but I wasted time and gas going to and from.

In LA and Orange county, I could have had indoor storage at over $300 per month but that price is ridiculous. Honestly, I don't know what these tenents are going to do because storage on El Toro is history due to the value of the homes that will be built there.

Here is a newly opened storage facility that has space left.
http://www.stcstorage.com/
It is in Norwalk, Ca. I bet it fills up fast.

I have spoken to the the Irvine City manager and several members of the City Council on this issue, they are committed to having RV storage as a component of the base re development for years to come. It is a cash cow and a no brainer for the new owners (Lennar Homes). The storage sites may be moved to different parts of the property, but they will be available for a long time
