We took our first trip pulling the toad this weekend. When we got there, the inside of the toad has this burnt smell to it. The smell was there before starting up the toad. The longer I pulled, the worse the smell got.

It is a 2000 Kia Sportage. I put the transfer case in nuetral and the trans in nuetral.

Am I cooking some of the trans fluid? Or some diffrential fluid?

Toad drove fine after we got there.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

If you take out you Trans. dip stick and smell the fluid it should not smell burnt or be brown. Make sure your brakes are not hanging up.

jzkbbi --

Just a thought -- my wrangler is towed transfer case in nuetral and auto transmission in park. Double-check Kia recommendations.

Is it manual or auto transmission? Only manual can be towed 4 down without mods according to 2000 MH towing guide.

The smell could be all of the road dirt, rubber etc., attached to the manifold and exhaust system during the tow. Mine usally has that burnt rubber smell for a short period after I tow it. I think that it is common with a towed vehicle.

Have the brakes checked out. I suspect a pad might be dragging. I've seen a tow truck pull a vehicle before without releasing the parking brake. Oooh, that really has a burnt smell!

Do you use a Supplemental Braking System???...They seem to slam the brakes when they engage....On the brake buddy I suggest lower the pressure some...I lowerd mine to 45 lbs instead of the 55 lbs that brake buddy recommended.....the brakes aren't slammed as hard.

I have not yet installed my braking system. The car is only 3000lbs. The smell was not an overheated brake smell. And I didn't leave on the parking brake either!!!

Thanks.

We get the same odor. In our case it is a collection of highway that collects on the front of the toad and on the undercarriage, plus the diesel film that collects from the coach exhaust. The catalytic converters get really hot and burn off the road grime and that's most likely what you smell. I have two toads, and they both stink for about a day after towing.
