OK, I am typing real slow ( The only way I know how to type ) and this is what I have as far as equipment
- Garmin Etrex Legend Hand held GPS
- A Data/12v power cable from Amazon.com for about $18. This is to save the batteries in the Legend
- Software Delorme Street Atlas 2005, Microsoft Streets and Trips 2004, Trailer Life 2005
The cable is a serial cable and my Dell 4150 has a serial port. I run the dell on an inverter that takes 12 Volts DC and supplies 110 Volts AC for the Laptop charger. Delorme software has a long learning curve but gives you more navigational information and if you search on the forum you will find that the 2005 version does not have as many campgrounds and truck stops such as Flying J's in its database. There is a web site by Escapees that provide additional POI's (Point Of Interest) that can be imported into both Delorme and Microsoft GPS software. There does not seem to be one piece of software that does it all!

The best software for what you want is the Delorme x-map for topo and just about everything else. IF you want just urban areas then get toop streets. Delorme can be use with just a laptop with an external antenna. The antenna is the size of a quarter.

If you purchase Topo USA, they throw in a free download of about 5,000 campgrounds in the 48 states. It won't attach to the Street Atlas software, only the Topo USA. It has a lot of 'no name' campgrounds, as well as the more well-known ones. It shows up only at the high zoom ratios.

Cedar41 – I hope I have not hijacked your thread. If I have, please post or send me a PM. I apologize if I have.
mapmaker1948 - I really do not know exactly what I want to do with it yet. I guess I will have to use something a while to determine that. I think I want to use something for streets and trip planning, some kind of TOPO map and something to keep from getting lost if I go four wheeling. I prefer not to take the laptop four wheeling.
Nana-Papa - I really appreciate your typing slow to make it easier for me to understand. LOL.
Can you give me the web site by Escapees that provide additional POI's (Point Of Interest) that can be imported?
Does the Data/12v power cable from Amazon.com, only provide power to the Legend?
I have been leaning toward the Garmin Etrex Legend Hand held GPS. I have some additional questions I will ask at the end of this post. I do have an inverter for the Laptop charger. I have a Gateway Lap Top.
Chopjaw - I have been leaning toward the Delorme Topo map. I haven't yet made the final decision.
mapmaker1948 - Can you give me a source for the Topo USA? If I buy the Topo USA, with the free download of about 5,000 campgrounds, can I use it with the DeLORME Earthmate Receiver and my laptop? The software (and box) say the DeLORME Earthmate Receiver is NMEA compliant, if this has any bearing.
If Topo USA will not attach to the Street Atlas software, will it work on a laptop with a Garmin Etrex Legend Hand held GPS?
One of my co-workers gave me a Garmin GPS 12. It has a port for a cable to laptop. As I recall, it is about two years old. He said he used it for about a year, went around the world. He is into sailing.
The Garmin GPS 12 was ran through an x-ray machine, and has not worked since. It gives a message "UPLOAD NOT PRESENT”. Additionally, I appears I cannot turn it off. When I press the QUIT button, the message remains. Maybe I am just not as smart as the button. I hope to send it to Garmin for repair. Are any of you familiar with this model? Is it worth having repaired?
Yesterday, I purchased a DeLORME Earthmate GPS receiver with Street Atlas USA. I have only played with it in the house. I will do a road test today.
I do want a Topo map. Chopjaw suggested Delorme Topo map. I would think it would be compatible with what I just purchased. Do any of you disagree with my using the Delorme Topo map? If so, why?
It would appear to me that you would use either the Street Atlas USA or the Delorme Topo map (or other Topo), but not at the same time. Is this correct?
mapmaker1948 suggested the Topo USA, with the free download of about 5,000 campgrounds. If it can be used with the DeLORME Earthmate GPS receiver, would it be a better choice? What are the advantages and disadvantages?
Your input is really appreciated.

I searched for Topo USA. The results imply it is a DeLORME product. Simply stated, DeLORME Topo USA 5.0. is this correct?
The DeLORME site says "Topo USA 5.0 gives you five maps in one – a topographic map, a shaded relief map, a 3-D shaded relief map, a trail map, and a road map. AND Topo USA 5.0 lets you route automatically for all of them!"
The site further states "With your purchase of Topo USA 5.0, you’re entitled to download $50 worth of ADPs absolutely FREE."
Does this include the 5,000 campgrounds in the 48 states?
The site says, "Now Available on a Convenient Single DVD or Multiple CDs. DVD Means No Switching Discs Every Time You Cross a Small Geographic Area"
Why would you want CDs (7 each?) if you have a laptop with a DVD?
The DeLORME Topo USA 5.0 is not a replacement of the DeLORME Street Atlas 2005 USA software. Is this correct?

The Website for the additional POI's from the Escapees is Additional POI's for Street Atlas and Microsoft Street and trips.
The cable for the Legend handheld GPS supplies both power and data connections.
I do have an inverter to power my Dell laptop via it's normal charger.

Wayne/Reddog:
You asked why someone would want the 7 CD set rather than one DVD for Topo 5.0
I am getting ready to order my Topo 5.0 from Delorme. I checked the system requirements and read that the CD set is for computers with a CD drive and the DVD is for computers with a DVD Drive.
My laptop has a DVD drive but my 2001 desktop just has the old CD drive.
So I am ordering the CD set.

Nana-Papa – Thanks for the web site by Escapees. Now I have to figure out how to import their data into my Street Atlas USA.
I appear the Legend handheld GPS can be used as a receiver only, and you can use something like Street Atlas USA. Is that correct?
I too have the inverter in the cab of my truck. Right now, it is wherever it ends up. Eventually, I think I will mount it under the dash.
GizmosMom – Have you received your Topo 5.0? Does it replace the Street Atlas USA? It appears that it is not very efficient for a street map, is that correct?
My Lap Top and my wife’s Desk Top both have DVD. I like the Idea of the DVD, but I am not sure how much hard drive space I want to commit to the Topo software. I am led to believe that with the seven discs you can install only that part of the country you are interested in, and with the DVD you must install all or nothing. Is this your understanding?
Last week, I had the opportunity to use the DeLORME Street Atlas 2005, GPS receiver, power inverter and Lap Top. I was not at all disappointed. I am still learning how to use the software, but it is going fast and I think all in all pretty user friendly.
After I wear off the new, I will put more time into determining which hand held I want. Right now I lean toward the Garmin Etrex Legend. I am still open for suggestions.
If anyone has any comments on my previous questions, or additional thoughts, please post.
EDIT: I really appreciate the slow typing. It is much easier for me to understand.

With the Legend you can navigate to a way point which is a point that you have either entered into the Legend or have downloaded. I use my Legend to Geocache Web site for Geocaching where I download locations of Geocaches from the web site into the Legend and Delorme Street Atlas. I navigate using Street Atlas to as close as I can get with the car and then use the Legend to navigate by foot to the Geocache.

Nana-Papa - It looks like you are using the GPS the way I intend to.
Would you please check the site you refered to? I went to the web site you posted, this is what I got:
http://www.allegro.com/papers/htpp.html
It talked about programing in Paskel.
