What is required to allow a late model Ford Ranger to be towable 4-down. Am interested in 4cy/std trans/2wd. Did a search and found very little info to answer my question. Is the Madza PU the same? Thanks

Dave,
We towed a 2000 Ford Ranger 4 cyl/std. trans./2wd for about 3 years. We had a Blue Ox base plate & tow bar and later added a Blue Ox braking system. Once it was hooked up, all I did was take it out of gear and turn the key one click to keep the steering wheel unlocked. We never had any problems with it. We now tow a 2005 Escape. Made the switch to have more room inside for people or the bicycles. The Ford dealer has a book on recreational towing that tells you which vehicles are towable 4 down. You might also find it at their website.
Hope this helps,
Linda B.

Yes. Ford owns a good chunk of Mazda, and Mazda makes trannies for the Ranger, plus other parts, too.

Not a bad thing, Mazda makes good stuff.

So what ever you figger out, will be the same for both.

I just finished outfitting my '01 Ranger for towing today. 4 cyl. 5spd manual.
I specifically bought it to tow. Will be heading out Monday on the first trip with it in-tow. I made no modifications other than installing a Blue OX baseplate, tow bar, and bulb and socket lighting kit. It took a full day to install baseplate and lighting kit. Amazingly, the baseplate tabs and motorhome hitch were exactly at the same height negating the need for a drop hitch as others I know have had to use. You won't have any problems towing yours. It was through the recommendation by others on this forum that led me to choose the Ranger as a dinghy. Thanks to all!

I failed to add that all Mazda B series pickups are the same as Rangers. In fact, the late model Ranger 2.3L 4 cyl. is actually a Mazda engine and tranny.
