We're thinking of reserving a site at Wellesley Island State Park near Alexandria Bay, NY for the first week of August. ReserveUSA. com shows sites in Area H1 still available. We are looking for a site with electricity hook-up that is large enough for our 31' motorhome. We prefer a woodsy site, but can only find reference to "partial shade" sites still reservable. Sites #002, 004, 018 are described that way. Other available sites in H1 loop are not described as shady or otherwise.

We've never been to the area. Is anyone familiar with these sites or this part of the campground? We're looking to take it easy for a week, with maybe a daytrip or two to local towns to watch the big ships, etc. We'd like to ride our bikes around the campground too, if possible. Any info you could provide about Wellesley Island State Park camping would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wellesley Island SP is a beautiful campground but...the problem is it is an island. Everytime you want to go out for the day to site-see or shop etc you have to pay to use the Thousand Island Bridge.
I think the nicest State Park up there is Cedar Point. Smaller but very nice. It is closer to Clayton. It used to be what ever park you are registered in you can go into the the other ones with that same camping pass to check them out . You will enjoy that area. Just sitting and watching the big ships go by is very relaxing. That's why I like Cedar Point, the shipping channel goes right by there. Go on one of the Boat Tours on the St Lawrence, it is great.

We have been going to Wellesley every year for the past 20 years. We stay in F loop which is full hook ups and normally full 9 months in advance. H loop is pretty open - not many trees and I'm not sure what they are calling "partially" shaded. It is very close to the Nature Center, however, where you can do some hiking. Wellesley is also a good place to ride bikes. The roads outside the campground on the Island itself are narrow and there may be lots of traffic during the summer, so bring helmets and wear them if you decide to venture outside the park. (It's a law in NYS anyway for kids). There is a small beach at the park which has a lifeguard. We really enjoy our trips there and find it's very laid back. The electric is new up in H loop as up until a couple of years ago, this was a no frills loop. They recently put new cabins up in that area and apparently, installed electricity in the loop. The dump station is not anywhere near the loop. Some of these sites may back up to Eel Bay but they are up on a bluff so the water is not accessible from here. however, right down the road there is a small put in for canoes or kayaks.

If you think you will be going off and on the Island more than a few times, purchase a 16 trip ticket for $12. It used to be $2.00 to get on the Island (both from Canadian and American side). You purchase it right at the toll booth. It's a lot cheaper than paying every time you go on the Island (there is no charge to leave the Island). It's good for 2 years (once you go, you'll want to go back). Or sell it to a fellow camper who will be comng back.

There is a great place for ice cream and hamburg/hots down the road from the campground in Fineview (The Guzzler in 1000 Island Village) as well as a nice hotel/restaurant (Wellesley Hotel) for a nicer dinner. Also, several golf courses on the Island, including the State Park Golf Course which I believe is $9/including a cart. It's not the best, but it's fun. You can get to the Boldt Castle Yacht House on the Island and from there, take a shuttle to Boldt Castle if you don't want to do the big boat cruise which takes you thru the Islands with a stop at Boldt Castle. However, I would recommend one of those rides as you will get some great views of what the Islands are all about and great history.

Like to fish? Plenty of spots in the Park to go stand and throw in your line.

Hope this helps. any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Thanks, folks. I appreciate the information.

It's a shame there is so little helpful information on the New York State Parks Web site. And I'm not impressed with the Reserve America site either. It's great if you're familiar with the destination, but if you're not, you won't learn much. This forum is better than both put together!

Thanks, again for your help.

I agree with you about RA and the NYS parks site. Very uninformative. Wellesley is a nice park and you will enjoy it. The other parks in the 1000 Islands are very nice as well. Your admission to Wellesley does entitle you to visit the other parks without additional charge too.
