If you've replaced your GM's OEM hitch receiver, what did you replace it with?

What factors were most important in deciding what hitch to go with and/or who to buy it from?

Did you run into any complications in your installation?

If you got the larger 2-1/2" receiver, do you have any issues with it? What's the best way to accommodate a 2" shank?

What did you do for the 7-pin plug that's welded into the OEM hitch?

I'm hoping to find a more robust replacement hitch that utilizes the two bumper mounting points of the OEM hitch, but I'm not sure I'd elect to go that route if it makes the 7-pin plug installation more involved or if I end up with the 2-1/2" receiver.

HitchMart came up in my search for Hidden Hitch and they have the best price I've found for a Class V hitch receiver for our Burb, including free shipping. Has anybody purchased their new hitch from them or know about this hitch?

On the page that comes up for our 2002 Burb, the first two hitches (Class III and Class III/IV) are clearly described as Hidden Hitches, but the class V hitch is not. The picture on the PDF instruction sheet looks the same as on the Hidden Hitch sheets, but no mention of Hidden Hitch is made. Can anyone clarify that it is indeed a Hidden Hitch? Do you know if this hitch has a 2" or 2-1/2" receiver?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Tim, A Draw-Tite #41930 is what I put on my Suburban. It's rated 1,200 lb tongue and 12,000 lb max in WD mode, uses the 2 bumper bolts in addition to the 6 frame attachment points, and has a 2x2 box.

I used the OEM connector mounted in a generic bracket from the local RV store

Why are you asking? Are you really thinking about replacing your receiver? I sure hope so, I'd like to hear that your next 1,200 mile trip is as trouble-free as the one you just took

Tim,
The recommended ball mount is a 2" square solid steel so the receiver has to be 2". The Hidden Hitch products are a part of Cequent and look identical to Reese products. Not postitive about the class V though. I would give Cequent a call and see what they say.

Thanks for the info, Don.

So far I'm very satisfied with the OEM receiver on our Burb, but I want to be prepared in the event that for any reason I have a sudden need or desire for a replacement hitch. I'm a skeptical and deliberate shopper and I'd rather not be limited by time pressures, but I'll almost certainly eventually replace the OEM receiver with something that should be a little more robust.

My tongue weight is right at 1200 pounds, so I'd like a receiver that is rated for just a bit more than the 1200 pounds your hitch is rated for. I take it your hitch is a Class IV. Do you mind sharing where you got it and do you know if they have any higher-rated hitches?

Thanks,

Tim

P.S. And thanks to you also, Barney. I'll be contacting Cequent with a few questions.

replaced mine with a reese titan class V, think putnam has the identical hitch with a different name (IIRC they are part of the same company)

Most places sell a reducer to allow use of a 2" reciever with the 2.5" opening. Since I only tow 8-10K I don't need the class V now. Reese is rated for about 12k/1200 lbs weight carrying, 14K/1700lbs weight distributing.

My gm hitch was bent from the factory and couldn't get my WD hitch tilted down enough so I pitched the factory hitch.

Tim:

In February 2004 I replaced OEM receiver hitch on my 2002 Suburban K2500 with Putnam XDR Class V model #25162.

I purchased mine from Southwest Wheel for $140 + tax.

Currently the XDR is only $128.95 plus $29 to ship to Kirkland.

At the time I bought my replacement receiver, the Putnam XDR had the highest ratings of any hitch I could find (weight carrying: 15,000 lbs. and 1,500 tongue weight; weight distribution: 16,000 lbs and 1,700 lbs tongue weight).

It has performed flawlessly towing an 8500 lb (loaded) SunnyBrook 29DBS with very similar specs to your 30FKS. I've logged in excess of 17,000 miles on my XDR.

I found my weight distribution was improved with the XDR over the OEM verified by CAT scales with my Hensley at the same settings.

I bought my Draw-Tite back a few years ago, and the hitch was rated at 1500 lbs tongue weight and 12000 total with WD. It appears that they have shifted their model line a bit so can't do apples-to-apples with the one I have. At the time, I couldn't find a receiver that was higher rated and didn't have a 2.5" box.

I was one of the first to swap out my OEM receiver, and didn't find out about the Putnam XDR until Russ and some other folks started changing theirs also. Unfortunately, I wasted time at the dealer trying to get some satisfaction out of Chevy, and my next planned camping outing was fast approaching. So, I found myself online late one night paying for expedited shipping on a very heavy item. So I commend you on two counts: 1) for recognizing that your OEM receiver is short-lived and 2) for planning ahead so you get the right part when you need it.

At any rate, you can see the entire Draw-Tite line at e-trailer. As Barney mentioned, Draw-Tite, Reese, Hidden Hitch and one or two others are now part of the Cequent Towing Products Group. I just ordered a front-mounted receiver for the burb from these guys.
