Please help to persuade GM to recall these substandard and dangerous hitch receivers. I bought a brand new 2006 Silverado in order to tow a 2005 Starcraft 3606 pop-up. The truck was bought on July 31, 2006 , it currently has 600 miles on it and less than 100 miles towing the pop-up. After reading some of the posts about hitch failures I crawled under and looked at mine. Much to my surprise I found a cracked weld on mine.
If you have a bad GM receiver, or have replaced one that cracked, PLEASE follow this link, http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ to file a complaint. If enough people file a complaint then GM will probably volunteer a recall. If it is warranted the United States Government will mandate that GM recall these hitches. Please have your VIN handy and fill out the form accurately. If you own a GM OEM hitch receiver and actually use it, please inspect it carefully, or better yet buy a sturdy aftermarket receiver and replace it. I will be replacing mine that is certain.

Did it look this bad?

This is from this link on RV.Net
http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseac........thread/tid/7350273/srt/pa/pging/1/page/3
There are at least two members of this forum that have lost family members to these hitches with the round crossmember.
Many of them call it the GM POS hitch.

No, I caught it as a cracked weld on the far passenger side of the hitch. I only saw it because I was lurking around here getting ready to buy a TT. I'll get my pictures posted later. It is a fracture at the weld most the way around. The picture shown is catastrophic, mine is impending.

I just bought a new '07 and when I plugged my hitch into it, I was disgusted at how much play there is in there. You could drive a Kenworth down the side of it there is so much slop in it. I can rattle the hitch up down and sideways a lot. When I was towing my TT home from Alberta a few days ago, I could feel and hear the thing clanging around. I just shake my head. All that loose play can't be good and I feel it must create undue pressure on the reciever from bouncing up and down. I'm going to start looking for a good replacement.
Cheap cheezy POS is right.

Please tell the NTHSA at
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
It only takes 15 minutes to report it. The biggest pain is finding you VIN.

Lance in Houston,
Welcome.
Please post your picturess as soon as convenient for you.
I've been looking a long time for pre-incident weld cracks in GM receivers and haven't seen any yet. You would be the first person I've read about on these forums who:
A. Found a fault at the welds near the side plates of the hitch at the frame
B. Found this fault prior to a towing accident of some sort, and
C. Offered to post pictures of the fault you found.
I think a lot of people here would be interested in seeing these pictures.

this "play" is certainly not isolated to gm recievers, ive had many reciever/drawbar combos i didnt care for. just change your drawbar until you find one tighter.........or change the reciever, but be aware you may still have the "play".
