I've started to think about the safest way to do this. What I do is remove the breakaway pin and after looping through one of the chain hooks on my receiver I pull the pin through the loop and then back into the solenoid. Is this the best way to do this? I used to just interwine in one of the chains, but then I figured that if the chain broke at that link, the breakaway cable would be useless. Thanks!

I went a little further and attached the break away cable to the frame of the truck. That way if I had a receiver failure (highly unlikely) I was safe. Did the same with the 5er's cable--it's rerouted to the bed corner at the tiedown brackets.

I also attach mine to the truck frame. It's not likely the trailer will become unattached from it's own chains.

Yep! right to the frame. it doesn`t even touch the chains.

Cool, but then does it still have the pin looped through the loop or do you attach it some other way? Also, how do you deal with all the slack? Do you run some of it through the chain to take that slack up?

I use a carabiner to hook mine onto the TV.

I hated pulling the pin out of the unit on the trailer: I always whacked my hand on something when it let loose.

I do check it once in a while to make sure it is not frozen in though.

We use a dog leash. Leash handle loops in truck bed eye-pad and clip end holds the eye on the break-away cable. This also makes it the longest line --you want your 7-pin to disconnect first before the trailer brakes come on in case this fries your truck's electronics, a danger which has been reported here by some. The idea of pulling the pin out to loop the cable suggests that the 7-pin cable might be attached at the time -yipes!

I use a quick link attached to my hitch, like others I don't think connecting to the chains is a good idea.

I have seen people with travel trailers hook it to the small ball on the receiver where the friction sway bar goes. They just put the loop right on the ball, then put the sway bar on top of that.
