Purchasing a new rig from out of state, dealer can't help with sales tax. When I go to pay the NC sales tax, is it on the difference of the trade, or the value of the new rig. Talked to tax office twice, and have got 2 answers. For those who have traded, which did you pay?

The dealer should subtract your trade in from the purchase price of the rig and that is what you should pay sales tax on. You already paid sales tax on your current rig so you shouldn't pay tax on that amount again.

I agree with tmmar; But I can speak for S.C.; It doesn't matter what you trade or what you pay; They pull the value up on their computer and thats what you pay; I've argued it with them on several purchases before, and have yet to win the battle.

In NC you do not pay sales tax on vehilces, instead, you pay a "Road Use Tax" (3%) that is based on the value of the vehicle everytime the title is transfered. If you are buying from a dealer, then that value is the sales price, minus your trade-in. If you are buying from an idividual, then it's based on 'book value' (I think NC uses the NADA).
A lot of the NC Tag offices are not state run, but are contracted private companies - so make sure you have all of the info in advance.

When I tried to tag my trailer, they tried charging me based on the GVWR - for recreational trailers tags are a set price of $11 per year. Plate Fees

In Florida its on the difference but some states differ. I would hunt it down on the state website. I would do it for you but I have lunch in the oven.

It depends on who you talk to at tax office. So far, majority at office agree it is difference not sales price. Going to show the link provided by mooresadventure when I go. Rig due in about 3 weeks+/-.

Lucky your not in California. Here in my city we pay 8.25% on the sale price regardless of a trade in. I guess that where we pay for the weather...

We did not pay sales tax on our MH (bought it in WI - lived in NC at the time). But we did pay the OTO fee of $1500. Here is an old thread where some of this is discussed with some links. Old Thread. You'll also need to pay an annual usage fee which is based on the RV value and the county where you live. How that process works is described in the link above. I don't know if or how that OTO fee is applied to a trade. While the link discussed MHs -- some of the secondary links to NC websites might be helpful to your situation.

We moved from NC in April so I don't know what if anything has changed. Forum member EJC1214 might be able to give you more advice if you need it. He use to own a MH and now owns a 5th wheel. I remember following his discussion on this topic several years ago and he still lives in NC.
