Agree on lubing the bars and the hitch ball. Never grease the friction sway and the Dual Cams.
Since the OP already has a Reese hitch, the easiest solution would be to consider the Dual Cams. They do make some noise, but not too bad (IMHO).
Also, you should never back when a friction bar is attached....it can buckle causing permenant damage to the friction bar.

To quiet the sway control pull the friction bar out of the sleeve and take a wire brush remove any residual dust/rust, etc., this will help reduce the popping noise but just remember hearing the popping noise tells the driver the sway control is tight enough to do it's job.

I use to have a "Reese" on my 5th wheel and my first tt. I just had a "equal-i-zer" installed to pull a small 22' single axle airstream and I must admit that the change has been a real pleasure. Pulls easy and hardly any noise.
