Hi:

We are looking to possibly purchase a 2004 4x4 Ford F150 with the extended cab and a 6' bed. It has the 5.4L Triton engine.

I know the Northstar Freedom TC will fit on it. Could anyone tell me other manufacturers that make a TC for the lightweight, shorter bed trucks? We want a hard side with shower and toilet (cassette toilet is fine.)

Thanks.

If you have not bought the truck yet, and still plan on having a camper, then why not get a truck strong enough to carry a camper that you can be comfortabble in?

I would always suggest a 3/4 or 1 ton longbed when it comes to carrying a camper. They are just more stable and have the cargo rating to carry all the camping gear, passengers and all the other weight without exceeding the GVWR of the truck.

Remember that a extended cab truck weight can be fairly high, so watch the cargo rating carefully.

I know someone with a crewcab diesel F-250 and the empty weight is about 7,000 pounds. It only has a 8,800 GVWR, so it's cargo rating is only about 1,400 cargo and 400 pounds of passengers.

The only TC that you can carry with an F-150 is a very spartan popup like a FourWheel Camper. You are centaiunly not going to get anything with a shower. Total cargo capacity of a 2004 F-1500 is only about 1700#. SeeLink.
Subtract from that the weight of passengers, fuel, water, supplies, - not much left for a camper. White knuckle driving is no fun. Pick out your camper first, THEN find a truck that will haul it.
Good luck.

Palomino sells some light weight popup campers that can be hauled on an F150. I carried a Palomino Bronco 1200 on a 1998 F150 with a V6 5 speed. The camper weights about 1300lbs.

Lance's new 825 would work. Though I agree with the other poster that if you haven't already bought the truck you should look into a more TC friendly F250 at least.

The Lance 825 prototype was on display at the last Pomona Rv show, even with the wetbath option its a little lighter than the 815. we do have a Lance 815 and it did start out on a 1984 chevie 1/2 ton. It does push the limit of a 1/2 ton so don't expect to tow a boat or anything else with it.
Lance 825,its still not shown on Lance's website

Just go get a F-250. The fuel economy difference between the two and the slightly bigger engine won't be substantial enough to be a breaking point. Then you'll have bigger brakes, better towing capacity, better hauling capacity, and a bit more of an expanded range of camper models.
