Pulling the valve on the black tank has gradually become a twisty gymnastic exercise, and of course I'm concerned that one of these days I won't be able to pull it at all. I can't imagine why it has gotten sticky, since it's only 14 years old. Anyway, I'd rather not replace it, so how do I get it to operate more smoothly?

Instead of messing with it, I would just replace it in a heartbet and lube the new one. You did not day if it was remote, but put some grease on the blade shaft for starters. At that age remote may need a new cable.

Replace it while you have the option of an empty, clean tank.

Granted, ours are not that old, but we find spraying them with silicone keeps them workable.

Hi All.

Well, you have a couple of choices. Take it apart, and buy a tube of Plumbers Grease, its safe, and also can be used on any drinking water supply fittings, as it is safe for humans. It also will last you for many mnay years. I use it on our RV, and ours is 12 years old, and you only need two fingers to slide our valves. You can also, carefully drill a hole in the top and bottopn of the Blade housing, and cement in a Zert Fitting, so you can grease it, from time to time. Also, any good brand of a Dry-Lube Sprays works great also. Or you can replace it. Good Luck. Happy Camping, Dan & Jill

Yep, I'd replace it. When we bought an older RV it had a sticky valve. I figured like Twomed. Better to do it with a clean tank, with the parts and tools at hand.

It is kinda like working on toilets. At first it seems like it will be a really messy, ucky, job. I was amazed how little mess there was once I flushed the tank good.

I use water proof grease. The suggestions for replacement are a good option.

Last season I replaced both dump valves as a simple matter of preventative maintenance, even though they still worked. They are cheap and I hate nasty surprises when traveling, especially surprises of the black water variety.

Joanne, is it a cable pull valve OR is it external where you can see the whole assembly?
IF you can see it, you can lubricate it.
IF it is concealed, thetford makes a blade valve lubricant that you pour in the tank. Instructions on the container. The problem with old valves is that the blade itself can have a buildup of calcium like deposits that coat the blade creating a rough surface.
I replaced a cable actuated valve about a week ago and the blade was rough.

Hi, I'm back.

It's a very simple external pull valve, I was LOL at the discussions of cables etc. Since I haven't had any hard-water issues elsewhere in the plumbing system, I guess I'll just try one of the lubricants mentioned above, and plan on buying the right replacement part in the near future.

Thanks, everyone!
