On sat my engine shut down on the interstate. Tried to restart and it would start and shut down right away. Ended up having it towed to Orlando Freightliner. Even though they are open 24/7 they couldn't start on it til mon. Yesterday they changed the lift pump with no difference. Then they changed the injector pump ($$$). Wouldn't start right away. The tech (?) worked on it for awhile and it finally started. After 10 min it died again. Been doing that all day today. One time it ran for awhile but every once in awhile the engine would "stumble". I am still stuck here! Any/all advice would be appreciated. The tech is really trying but he has only been here for 4 months and before that he was an auto mechanic.
Thanks
DICK

Your description of mechanic seems to indicate that he is not qualified and/or certified to work on these engines; not enough time to have been through he necessary/required training. I would check to see if the FL dealer is certified by Cummins although in that large a city I suspect they are but you need to insist they use a qualified mechanic.

First, I went to Orlando Freightlinner for a recall issue on front ball joints, and I was not impressed!! You have many good suggestions, I hope you will post the outcome. As you may or may not know there is a second fuel filter mounted on the chassis, before the spin off filter. I had a similar experiance with my Coach and that was the problem. Good Luck.

Thanks all for the replies.
Today they had a more experienced tech work with the other one.
It was never throwing an error code. At one time they hooked up some kinda unit that bypasses the ECM (Electronic Control Module)and it ran the injector pump. Coach ran smooth and didn't stop. They then started checking readings on connecters/wiring between the ECM and injector. All checked OK. They then got their "test" ECM and hooked it up. It ran for 25 min without stumbling or stopping. They decided I needed a new ECM. They didn't have one and the local Cummins dealer didn't either. Only place to get one for my older coach was from the Cummins factory in Memphis. They are air freighting one in, due to arrive tomorrow AM. Then they have to program it and install it. Hope it works.
The service mgr said he would write off the cost of the air freight and talk to the parts mgr in the AM and hopefully reduce the price of all the parts some. So far the tab is about $4000.00!
I don't feel bad about the new injector pump because I had to replace the lift pump last year due to leaks (lots of posts on leaks caused by ULSD). The new one started leaking also. I had read on diesel forums that a bad lift pump will/can cause problems with the injector pump. So I asked to check it when the tech took it off and sure enough there was some loose metal in there. The injector pump has very close tolerances and without the proper lube & pressure from the lift pump, that is what causes the IP to break down. So far I am comfortable that they are NOT just throwing parts at the engine. The techs have been very cooperative and open with me. They are working on it outside so I get to be there when they are working. If it was in the shop I wouldn't be allowed in there.

Have they put a diagnostic computer on the chassis or are the mechanics just guessing what is wrong based on their experience? I hate to say it but it is a situation like this that convinced me to by VMSpc in the first place. Being able to monitor the engine real time is a plus but knowing what codes are set and when could be a real money saver. Just my $.02 worth.

I tried a VMSPC and it wouldn't work correctly on my model engine. Martin & Chris @ VMSPC tried lots of things but couldn't get all the functions to work. (My coach is a '98 and original owners bought it in late '97 so I think it's an early ISB).

Thanks again to all of you and I will keep you updated if this 'cure' does or doesn't work.

Well, Cummins did not ship the part when they said they would. It finally came in today and when the tech's assistant was disconnecting the old ECM he broke the connection on the wiring harness. None available around here so the tech found a used one that fits my model and he is having to switch the 30 some wires from the old one. EXCEPT the old ones will not come out. He is going to cut the wires and attach new metal ends on them and then install the wires in the connection. Said he will finish tomorrow. Yeah sure!
Tomorrow (sat) we will have been here week. No hookups and running the genny 24/7 as our dog is not allowed in the customer lounge and too hot to sit around all day. I want to stay in the MH so I can be on top of things as they happen.

Dick - Hang in there guy. I've been in your spot before, albeit not as long, so I feel for you. I'm still trying to resolve a problem I'm having, but I was lucky enough to limp home after the third Cummings Service center didn't find the core problem (Fuel restriction in a ISC 8.3 L, I-6).

Give the dog a pat for me and think of the day you'll be pulling out of their lot.

We're all here with ya.

Well, it continues on! Tech got all the wires replaced, started to program the ECM, wouldn't take. He called in the puter tech and they found out that it is the wrong ECM! Will order another one on mon and install on tues. I'm not holding my breath!
The tech had to go and get me 20 gals of diesel so we could continue to run the genny over the weekend. Couldn't get him to dump my black or gray tank tho.

Freightliner had a tech from Cummins come over and he had to 'fool' the ECM to get it programed for my coach. Anyway, we were on the road by 1PM and are setup at our original destination. Although $4500.00 poorer!

Boy, that hurts. It can be frustrating when on the road. That would have bought near 1,000 gal of fuel! Tough to keep smiling through all that. Hope the rest of your travels are trouble free.
